Types of Student Employment
Summer and Academic Year Jobs Informtion
ARS research facilities in the Northern Plains Area typically hire college and high school students during the busy summer field season as well as during the academic year. Most student jobs involve agricultural/science based laboratory and/or field work, although students are also hired for a variety of administrative support (clerical, accounting, computer, etc.) positions. Student jobs require US citizenship. See our Types of Appointments page for a description of appointment types.
Generally, the Careers link from each location’s web site lists student/temporary jobs, along with contact information and application instructions (see the list above and to the right). Alternatively, you may also contact the Administrative Officer (AO) and/or Research Leader (RL) at each location (see the CDs / RLs and AOs page) for information about jobs, application procedures, deadlines, etc. Inquires about possible jobs can be done through email or telephone. In either case, it is recommended that you first familiarize yourself with each location by reviewing their web site prior to inquiring about jobs.
Student/Temporary Jobs with the NPA Area Office:
The NPA Area Office in Fort Collins also occasionally hires students to work in administrative support positions. Questions about student/temporary jobs with the Area Office can be directed to Barbara King (970-492-7053, Barbara.King@ars.usda.gov) or Kathi White (970-492-7003, Kathi.White@ars.usda.gov). The Area Office is located at the Natural Resources Research Center, 2150 Centre Ave., Building D, Suite 300 (map).
There are currently no active recruitments for student/temporary jobs with the NPA Area Office.
Summer Internships & Apprenticeships Information
The NPA typically offers 6-8 summer internships (college students) and/or summer apprenticeships (high school students) each summer. These positions are full time for 8 weeks at competitive rates of pay. Students work on actual research projects with scientists and technicians, and deliver a presentation on their research during their final week. These positions are competitive, and provide students with wonderful, and paid, learning experiences. Previous issues of our employee newsletter, VOICES, have featured summer interns/apprentices; check out the November 2011 issue to read about students from 2011.
Additionally, the research center at Clay Center, NE (MARC) plans to hire 6 interns in the summer of 2012 to work with PhD scientists in six research units: Animal Health, Environmental Management, Genetics and Breeding, Meat Safety and Quality, Nutrition, and Reproduction. Applications must be submitted by February 1, 2012 and selections will be announced March 1, 2012. Visit their site for complete details and application instructions.
Positions are posted on this site in January, so keep this site bookmarked and check it weekly starting in the second week of January.
