Things to consider while planning your visit to the museum

Whatever reason brings you to northern New Mexico and the Los Alamos area, be sure to schedule time to visit the Bradbury Science Museum.

Climate

Los Alamos (altitude 7,355 feet) has a mild, four-season climate. Summers have moderately warm days and cool nights. Afternoon temperatures are in the 70s and 80s and infrequently reach 90 degrees. Afternoon thunderstorms in July and August mark the “monsoon” season in northern New Mexico. Winters are typically short with many mild, sunny days. There is usually just enough snow in the winter to support the local ski area.

Be prepared

Climate and weather conditions can vary across northern New Mexico. Dress in layers and bring an umbrella, just in case. Our blue skies also mean you’ll need protection from the sun—wear sunscreen and your shades. And with our high altitude and low humidity, be sure to stay well hydrated.

Avoid the crowds

Our busiest season is May through August. Visit us instead during the fall and winter when we have fewer visitors. Activity picks up again in March and April with school visits and spring break.

First week in October

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a great time to visit New Mexico. Watch the mass ascension at sunrise, make the day trip up to Los Alamos, and be back to Albuquerque in time to see the Balloon Glow.

Summer in Santa Fe

This is the peak season to visit Santa Fe, whether for world famous cultural activities like the Santa Fe Opera or art markets: Spanish Market in July and Indian Market in August. Take a break from the Santa Fe scene and make a day trip to Los Alamos.

Summer afternoons

Visit Bandelier National Monument in the morning for a hike before it gets too hot, and then come up to the Bradbury Science Museum in the afternoon and avoid the chance of getting caught hiking in a thunderstorm.

Monday afternoons

During the off-season most museums in Santa Fe are closed on Monday, so it’s a great day to get out of town and come up to visit Los Alamos and the Bradbury Science Museum in the afternoon.
