May Monthly Steel Fact Sheet
The preliminary data released show that overall steel imports in May 2009 decreased 17.1 percent from April 2009. This change in the May total amount of steel imports was due to decreases in most categories including carbon and alloy blooms, billets, and slabs (-88.7%), cold-rolled sheets (-48.1%), and line pipe (-24.5%). Notable increases included carbon and alloy oil country goods (24.6%) and plates in coil (21.3%). May 2009 imports of steel mill products were down 59.2 percent compared to May 2008.
