 PATUXENT RIVER NAVAL AIR STATION, Md. (Nov. 8, 2012) U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Robert Schmidle, Deputy Commandant for Aviation, makes a point during a discussion at Patuxent River Naval Air Station where joint service aviation leadership met on Nov. 8. Leaders provided vision and guidance for a smooth transition for the F-35 Lightning II into the fleet and to reduce sustainment costs. In the discussion (left to right), were Vice Adm. David Venlet, F-35 Lightning II Program Executive Officer; Lt. Gen. Schmidle; Vice Adm. David Buss, Commander Naval Air Forces and Naval Air Force, Pacific; Vice Adm. David Dunaway, Commander, Naval Air Systems Command; and Air Force Maj. Gen. Christopher Bogdan, F-35 Lightning II Deputy Program Executive Officer. Other subjects discussed included creation of a Type/Model/Series team for the F-35, similar to those for other aircraft platforms across Naval Aviation, the need to determine and implement the most efficient model for maintaining the aircraft, and training and simulation issues. The USS Carl Vinson hosted Naval Aviation Enterprise leaders July 18 as part of a process improvement program known as Boots on the Deck. The Boots-on-the-Deck briefs and site tours provided Naval Aviation leaders with insight from Fleet Sailors on process improvement ideas that advance readiness and reduce costs.
