Abuse Prevention

Accessing Safety Initiative - Funded by the Office on Violence Against Women, the Accessing Safety Initiative helps organizations and communities meet the needs of women with disabilities & Deaf women who are victims or survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Battered Women's Justice Project - The Battered Women's Justice Project offers training, technical assistance, and consultation on the most promising practices of the criminal and civil justice systems in addressing domestic violence.  Staff attorneys and advocates can provide information and analyses on effective policing, prosecuting, sentencing, and monitoring of domestic violence offenders.

Guide to Online Social Networking for Military Families - This Guide is designed to help military families understand online social networking sites, the basic features that are typically available, and the benefits of using such sites.

Maltreatment of Children with Disabilities Training and Prevention Program Resources - A publication from the Administration for Children and Families.

National Child Traumatic Stress Network - The mission of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network is to raise the standard of care and improve access to services for traumatized children, their families and communities throughout the United States.

National Study on Crime Against Persons with Disabilities - A national study on crime against persons with disabilities by the Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Statistics, Office of Justice Programs.

The Risk and Prevention of Maltreatment of Children with Disabilities - A publication from the Administration for Children and Families.

Adoption

DoD Adoption Reimbursement Program - The National Military Family Association has published a fact sheet on Public Law (P.L.) 102-190, which established a permanent adoption reimbursement program for active duty military members and members of the Coast Guard. The adoption of special needs children and inter-country adoptions are included.

MilitaryAdoption.com - Agencies that work with military families find in them many of the positive attributes they are looking for in adoptive families. Among these are ethnic diversity, access to adoption benefits, and availability of medical resources.

Disability Resources

Bandaids and Blackboards - A site about growing up with medical problems...any type. Helping people understand what it's like, from the perspective of the children and teens who are doing just that.

Best Buddies - A nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment. Best Buddies is an organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,200 middle school, high school, and college campuses in each state and internationally.

Brave Kids - Dedicated to helping children with chronic, life-threatening illnesses and disabilities.

Christopher and Dana Reeve Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) - Promotes the health and well-being of people living with paralysis and their families by providing comprehensive information, resources and referral services. 

Computer/Electronics Accomdations Program (CAP) Interpreter Services Data Base - The CAP Interpreter Services Database is a compilation of the services CAP is aware of throughout the country.

Cornucopia of Disability Information (CODI) - CODI serves as a community resource for consumers and professionals by providing disability information in a wide variety of areas.

Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention - The Children With Disabilities online guide - National, state, local and Federal resources.

Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) - The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) is the largest international professional organization dedicated to improving educational outcomes for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities, and/or the gifted. CEC advocates for appropriate governmental policies, sets professional standards, provides continual professional development, advocates for newly and historically underserved individuals with exceptionalities, and helps professionals obtain conditions and resources necessary for effective professional practice.

Department of Transportation-Aviation Consumer Protection Division - The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has established a toll-free hotline to assist travelers with disabilities. The hotline will provide general information to consumers about the rights of air travelers with disabilities, respond to requests for printed consumer information, and assist air travelers with time-sensitive disability-related issues that need to be addressed in "real time."

Disabilities.Org - Disability Resources Monthly (DRM) guide to disability resources on the internet.

Home Community Based Services - This is the official location for information about activities of The Community Living Exchange Collaborative: A National Technical Assistance Program, the Formative Evaluation for the Systems Change Initiative, and the Home and Community-Based Services Resource Network.

Homes for our Troops - Specially adapted homes for severely wounded veterans.

Make A Wish Foundation - Grants wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.

Paralyzed Veterans of America - A non-profit organization chartered by the U.S. Congress and dedicated to serving the needs of paralyzed veterans.

Quality Mall - Quality Mall has free information about person-centered supports for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Each of the Mall stores has various departments with positive practices that can help people with disabilities live, work and participate in their communities, and improve the quality of their supports.

Wish Upon A Star - A non-profit, law enforcement effort designed to grant the wishes of children afflicted with high-risk and terminal illnesses.

Hurricane Public Service Announcements - Available in audio, video and American Sign Language formats.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Mold Fact Sheet - Information on how to identify mold, health effects, and clean up tips.

Emergency Preparation

72hour.org - An online guide to building and maintaining an emergency supply for families to combat various natural and man made disasters, specifically addressing the first 72 hours immediately following a disaster.

American Red Cross - American Red Cross disaster preparedness publication for People with Disabilities.

Autism Risk Management - Provides Autism information and resources for law enforcement, first response and criminal justice agencies.

Child Care Resources for Disasters and Emergencies - A site that includes a wide range of information and resources about emergency preparedness, disaster and emergency response efforts, recovery resources, and lessons learned.

CYFERnet - A site bringing together the best, children, youth and family resources of all the public land-grant universities in the country.

Disaster Assistance.gov - Provides information on how to get help before, during and after an emergency.

Do2Learn - A web site that provides activities to promote independence in children and adults with special learning needs. This website has fire safety, safety signs and street safety picture cards.

DC Emergency Management Agency Family Emergency Preparedness Guide - The Family Preparedness Guide is designed to help District of Columbia residents learn what to do before, during, and after an emergency, but the information is useful to all families if faced with an emergency situation. It contains information about event/evacuation routes, how to prepare a family emergency plan, and what items to include in an Emergency Go Kit. It also tells readers what to do during and after an emergency and has special information for pet owners. A list of important District telephone numbers is included.

Fisher Houses -  Supporting America's military in their time of need, Fisher Houses provide "a home away from home" that enables family members to be close to a loved one at the most stressful time - during hospitalization for an illness, disease or injury.

Arc's Home Page (The Association of Retarded Citizen's Home Page) - Committed to the welfare of all children and adults with mental retardation.

Beach Center on Disability -  The Beach Center on Disability offers training and technical assistance to families and individuals affected by disability.

Bright Futures - Divided into the four developmental stages of childhood, these easy-to-read sheets are designed to help families promote the health and well-being of their children with information on topics such as social development, child care, safety, eating and physical activity.

BullyingInfo.org - The Federal Partners in Bullying Prevention Steering Committee has partnered with the Interagency Working Group on Youth Programs to share information the federal government has prepared to help prevent and address bullying in communities.

Conill Institute for Chronic Illness - The Conill Institute for Chronic Illness is a nonprofit organization that develops educational programs to help patients, families, care partners and employers deal more effectively with chronic illness and disability.

Exceptional Parenting Magazine - Exceptional Parenting Magazine provides an on-line resource for many issues facing parents of exceptional children.

Families USA - National nonprofit, non-partisan organization dedicated to the achievement of high-quality, affordable health and long-term care for all Americans.

Family Village - Family Village is a global community that integrates information, resources, and communication opportunities on the Internet for persons with cognitive and other disabilities, for their families, and for those that provide them services and support. The community includes informational resources on specific diagnoses, communication connections, adaptive products and technology, adaptive recreational activities, education, worship, health issues, and disability-related media and literature.

Family Voices - Family Voices is an information clearinghouse for educational material concerning the health care of children with special health needs.

Family Voices Leadership Handbook - The Family Voices Leadership Handbook a health care policy guide for families and friends of children and youth with special health care needs. This Handbook was created by families for families of children and youth with chronic illnesses or disabilities.

March of Dimes - March of Dimes offers information on a variety of birth defects and genetics.  They have comprehensive coverage for pregnancy through caring for your newborn.

New Parent Support - The first three years of life are critical in a child's physical, emotional, and intellectual development. Military life presents some unique parenting challenges that civilian families may not face, such as frequent deployments, long duty hours, moves to unfamiliar locations, and separation from extended families and friends. The New Parent Support Program was developed to help military families with young children to adapt to parenthood and to thrive as healthy families no matter where their service may take them.

National Information Center For Children And Youth With Disabilities - National Information Center
For Children And Youth With Disabilities (NICHCY). "NICHCY is the national information center that
provides information on disabilities and disability-related issues. Anyone can use our services-families,
educators, administrators, journalists, students. Our special focus is children and youth (birth to age 22)."

Parent Advocacy Coalition For Educational Rights (PACER) - PACER is a nonprofit organization that helps parents and families of children with disabilities. PACER's programs help parents become informed and effective representatives for their children in early childhood, school-age and vocational settings.

Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center (PEATC) - PEATC serves families of special needs children in Virginia by provides information on the complex maze of educational, health care and social services for your child. The PEATC staff and board are parents of children with disabilities, people with disabilities and professionals who serve them.

Parents Helping Parents - Meeting Children's Special Needs Through Parents Helping Parents. PHP is a comprehensive, not-for-profit family resource center run for and by parents of children with special needs, in California.

Parent Information and Training Centers - Parent centers in each state provide training and information to parents of infants, toddlers, school-aged children, and young adults with disabilities and the professionals who work with their families. This assistance helps parents participate more effectively with professionals in meeting the educational needs of children and youth with disabilities. Specialized Training of Military Parents (STOMP) - A federally funded Parent Training and Information (PTI) Center established to assist military families who have children with special education or health needs. STOMP is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The staff of the STOMP Project are parents of children who have disabilities and have experience in raising their children in military communities and traveling with their spouses to different locations.

National Military Family Association - The National Military Family Association is a nonprofit organization committed to strengthening and protecting the families of the men and women currently serving, retired, wounded or fallen. It provides families of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Commissioned Corps of the USPHS and NOAA with information, works to get them the benefits they deserve, and offers programs that improve their lives.

The Arc - Sibling Support Project - The Sibling Support Project is a national program dedicated to the interests of brothers and sisters of people with special health and developmental needs. The Project's primary goal is to increase the availability of peer support and education opportunities for brothers and sisters of people with special health and developmental needs.

The Compassionate Friends - Through a network of more than 625 chapters with locations in all 50 states, as well as Washington DC and Puerto Rico, The Compassionate Friends has been supporting bereaved families after the death of a child for four decades. Whether your family has suffered the loss of a child (at any age from any cause) or you are trying to help and comfort those who have experienced such a loss, Compassionate Friends may be helpful to those who are grieving.

National Association of Estate Planners & Councils (NAEPC) - The NAEPC is a national organization of professional estate planners and affiliated estate planning councils focused on establishing and monitoring the highest professional and educational standards.

Protected Tomorrows -  A nationwide network  of independent  professional advisors specifically training to provide assistance to families with creating future care plans.
