Early Intervention

Administration for Children and Families - Head Start Information and Publication Center (HSIPC), a service of the Head Start Bureau, supports the Head Start community and other organizations working in the interest of children and families by providing information products and services; conference and meeting support; publication distribution; and marketing and outreach efforts. This site also has a search engine for locating Head Start Programs near you!

Developmental Progress Chart - Developmental Progress Chart.

Department of Defense Directory for DoD Dependents Schools (DoDDS) and Educational and Developmental Intervention Services (EDIS) - The Military Medical Departments through their Educational and Developmental Intervention Services (EDIS) provide Early Intervention Services (EIS) and related services in OCONUS locations where the Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) is responsible for educational services. The OCONUS Directory is intended to assist the medical and educational assignment coordinators to identify those military communities outside the continental United States (OCONUS) with pre-established programs or services for children with special needs.

Please Note: The DoDDS and EDIS OCONUS Directory does not identify pre-established programs or services for special medical needs.

Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT) - GAO Report - Early and Periodic Screening, Diagnostic, and Treatment (EPSDT), calls for states to provide children and adolescents under age 21 with access to comprehensive, periodic evaluations of health, developmental, and nutritional status, as well as vision, hearing, and dental services. Despite the importance of these services, there is concern that families are not sufficiently informed of benefits and that enrolled children are not receiving them.

Office of Head Start - Provides a range of individualized services in the areas of education and early childhood development; medical, dental, and mental health; nutrition; and parent involvement. In addition, the entire range of Head Start services is responsive and appropriate to each child's and family’s developmental, ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage and experience.

U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services - The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services (OSERS) is committed to improving results and outcomes for people with disabilities of all ages.

ZERO TO THREE - ZERO TO THREE's mission is to support the healthy development and well-being of infants, toddlers and their families. They are a national, nonprofit, multidisciplinary organization that informs, educates and supports adults who influence the lives of infants and toddlers.

Inclusion

Circle of Inclusion - An outreach training project designed to address the challenges and issues of inclusive program development for children with severe, multiple disabilities.

The Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services - OSERS's mission is to provide leadership to achieve full integration and participation in society of people with disabilities by ensuring equal opportunity and access to and excellence in education, employment, and community living.

National Service Handbook - The Corporation for National and Community Service has published a guide that provides information on how to make national and community service programs more inclusive for persons with disabilities. The "Handbook for the Inclusion of People with Disabilities in National and Community Service Programs" provides information about creating an inclusive environment, a brief historical overview of social perceptions of people with disabilities, disability-related laws, how to write inclusive service descriptions, recruitment and outreach, and accommodations issues and legal requirements.

Paths to Inclusion - A Resource guide for fully including youth of all abilities in community life.

Learning Disability

Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation - Schwab Learning is a service of the Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation, a private, nonprofit foundation that funds programs in learning differences and human services. Schwab Learning's vision is to help kids with learning differences be successful in learning and life, transforming for good the lives of a significant number of children in the U. S. impacted by learning differences.

Council for Learning Disabilities - This council offers support to parents and seeks to heighten public awareness of issues pertaining to children and adults with learning disabilities.

Guidance and Career Counselors Took Kit - This education toolkit is intended to help guidance and career counselors to better assist high school students with disabilities in accomplishing transitions into postsecondary education and employment.

Learning Disabilities Association of America - LDA is a non-profit volunteer organization advocating for individuals with learning disabilities.

Learning Disabilities Online - This is the leading web site on learning disabilities for parents, teachers, and other professionals.

National Center for Learning Disabilities - The center's mission is to increase opportunities for all individuals with learning disabilities to achieve their potential. NCLD accomplishes its mission by increasing public awareness and understanding of learning disabilities, conducting educational programs and services that promote research-based knowledge, and providing national leadership in shaping public policy.

Northeast Technical Assistance Center Online Notetaker Training - Online training of student notetakers is comprehensive, interactive and free. There are three modules that take about 90 minutes to complete. Although this program emphasizes taking notes for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, it can be used to take notes for students with many other disabilities.

Library

ipl2: Information You Can Trust - In January 2010, this website was launched, merging the collections of resources from the Internet Public Library (IPL) and the Librarians' Internet Index (LII) websites. ipl2 is is a searchable, annotated subject directory of more than 7,000 Internet resources selected and evaluated by librarians for their usefulness to users of public libraries. It's meant to be used by both librarians and non-librarians as a reliable and efficient guide to describe and evaluate Internet resources.

Other Educational Resources

Best Buddies - A nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with intellectual disabilities by providing opportunities for one-to-one friendships and integrated employment. Best Buddies is an organization that has grown from one original chapter to more than 1,200 middle school, high school, and college campuses in each state and internationally.

College Living Experience - A post-secondary program that provides intensive assistance with academic, independent living and social skills to college students with LD, ADD, ADHD, Autism, Asperger's and other special needs as they transition to become independent adults. CLE locations include Austin, Denver and Ft. Lauderdale.

Department of Education Family Educational Rights and Privacy (FERPA) Final Rule - The Family Educational Rights and Privacy (FERPA) Final Rule.

Department of Education Tool Kit on Teaching and Assessing Students with Disabilities: Parents' Materials - This Tool Kit brings together the most current and accurate information, including research briefs and resources designed to improve instruction, assessment, and accountability for students with disabilities in a format that is easy to access and to understand.

DoDDS Europe

DoD Schools Test Results - Look up the test data for the National Assessment of Educational Progress for any DoD school.

DoD School Websites - This site allows users to link to the email address of any school within the DoD school system either in the United States, or overseas.

EDUCATION DIRECTORY FOR CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS - The DoD's new Education Directory for Children with Special Needs provides useful, practical information for families of military dependents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and assignment personnel when considering assignment locations in California, Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. The directory provides the following information:

  • brief summaries of national and state policies related to ASD, including the latest evidence-based practices for children with ASD
  • profiles and contact information for districts that serve military installations in the selected states
  • a representative list of effective resources
  • suggestions and resources to assist families during the educational transition of their child with ASD

Federal Resource Center (FRC) for Special Education - A national network of technical assistance programs which helps to educate children and youth with disabilities. This network was created to assist state and local education agencies in the improvement of special education assessment and programs.

Going to College - A resource for teens with disabilities to help them plan for what to expect in college and what professors will expect from them. Tips for good grades, accommodations, and how to use technology. They can also learn how to use their strengths, learning style, and interests to set goals for college.

Joint Guidance on the Application of the FERPA and HIPAA to Student Health Records - This guidance explains the relationship between the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) Privacy Rule.

Learning Opportunities for Your Child Through Alternative Assessments - This Department of Education booklet introduces parents to school improvement efforts contained in the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

National Center of Secondary Education and Transition - The National Center on Secondary Education and Transition (NCSET) was established to create opportunities for youth with disabilities to achieve successful futures.

National Clearinghouse on Postsecondary Education and Disabilities - The Heath Resource Directory is a biannual selection of resources in the major areas of interest in the field of post secondary education and disability.

National Public School Locator - This is the National Center for Educational Statistics website for locating neighborhood schools.

NICHCY's Building the Legacy: A Training Curriculum on IDEA 2004 - Provides authoritative
information about, and training materials on, IDEA and its final Part B regulations.

Office of Overseas Schools of the U.S. Department of State - School-age children among overseas Americans--estimated to number nearly a quarter million--attend a wide variety of schools. Most of the children of military personnel attend schools established and operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, and a number of civilian government agency and private-sector children also attend these schools on a space-available, tuition-paying basis. However, most civilian agency dependents abroad attend non-government, coeducational, independent schools of various kinds. Although these schools include those founded by U.S. companies, church organizations, and individual proprietors, the majority are nonprofit, nondenominational, independent schools established on a cooperative basis by American citizens residing in foreign communities. Many of the schools in this latter group have received assistance and support from the U.S. government under a program administered by the Office of Overseas Schools of the U.S. Department of State. The schools that have received such assistance constitute the "American-sponsored" schools described in this Fact Sheet.
