Thumbnail preview ANNOTATION: The prevention of sexual assault, physical violence, and self-harm or suicide are an important issue facing jail administrators. This brief explains how situation crime prevention can be used to address the perpetration of these violent acts. “Rather than changing the underlying motivation behind offending behavior … a situational crime prevention approach [is used] to change the environment and how it is managed, closing off opportunities for crime” (p. 1). Strategies described are the improvement of supervision, the installation of surveillance cameras, and the training of officers in crisis intervention. While these safety interventions were not statistically significant in their effectiveness, they nevertheless provide valuable lessons for other jails in situational crime prevention.
