Energy Savings through Improved Mechanical Systems and Building Envelope Technologies

Funding: $12,000,000

Open Date: 03/09/2012

Close Date: 04/17/2012

Funding Organization: Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy

Funding Number: DE-FOA-0000621

Summary:

The focus of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to develop specifically-identified technologies for buildings that are cost effective and can have a tremendous impact on energy savings overall and lead to a market-ready solution (e.g. at the commercial prototype phase) within five years of project launch. More specifically, the FOA is intended to support prototyping and optimization of proposed technologies for which proof-of-concept scientific demonstration already exists. Projects will be expected to focus on the research, development, demonstration, and commercialization paths of the proposed technology while addressing any shortcomings or barriers to market entry. Projects must credibly demonstrate how the proposed technologies will meet the targets specified in the sub-topic descriptions. Projects under this FOA must be aimed at more than progress toward identified project goals; the project must be aimed at actual delivery of these project goals. Topic 1: Energy Saving Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems Subtopic 1.1: High Performance Air Source Cold Climate Heat Pumps Subtopic 1.2: Alternative Space-Heating Systems Subtopic 1.3: Next-Generation Heat Exchangers for Electric Vapor-Compression Heat Pumps and Air Conditioners Topic 2: Energy Saving Building Envelope Solutions Subtopic 2.1: High performance thermal insulation Subtopic 2.2: Advanced Roof/Attic Solutions Subtopic 2.3: Highly insulating windows The full Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is posted on the EERE Exchange website at: https://eere-exchange.energy.gov Applications must be submitted through the EERE Exchange website to be considered for award. The applicant must first register and create an account on the EERE Exchange website. The Users' guide for applying to Department of Energy (DOE), Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy?s (EERE) Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOA) through the Exchange website can be found at https://eere-exchange.energy.gov/Manuals.aspx. Information on where to submit questions regarding the content of the announcement and where to submit questions regarding submission of applications is found in the full FOA posted on the EERE Exchange website.

Additional Information:

In accordance with the Cost Share Waiver granted by the Under Secretary for EERE on February 24, 2012, Recipients and subrecipients that are non-profit organizations (as defined in 10 CFR 600.3), institutions of higher education, U.S. National Laboratories, or U.S. Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) funded under this FOA are eligible for a waiver of cost share requirements. Eligible entities as listed above are not required to provide a minimum cost share in their applications. For those entities not eligible for a cost share waiver, the cost share must be at least 20% of the total allowable costs for research and development projects (i.e., the sum of the Government share, including FFRDC contractor costs if applicable, and the recipient share of allowable costs equals the total allowable cost of the project) and must come from non-Federal sources unless otherwise allowed by law.
