KABUL– A local Jacksonville, Texas native promoted to the rank of Air Force staff sergeant while serving a six-month tour as a member of the personal security detail team for NATO Training Mission–Afghanistan’s commander at Camp Eggers.

Staff Sgt. Sergio E. Servin and his team provide security and carry out convoy missions outside the wire with the commander to various locations within Kabul. Servin serves as a driver and a machine gun operator within the 13-man team.

“I like the combat missions we perform and the uniqueness of our mission,” said Servin. “It’s not common to hear about Air Force security forces performing personal security for a general on deployment.”

Servin is deployed from Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., as a base protection patrolman. This is his third deployment of his military career and working in a joint-coalition environment.

“I had to prove myself and show my work ethic to my leadership in order to get chosen for this deployment,” said Servin. “Working in a joint environment has been interesting because you get to see how everyone has a way of doing things and you learn from them.”

During his deployment, Servin has also used his off-time to take college classes online and will receive his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice this summer. In 2007 he joined the Air Force and now has hopes to commission within the near future.

“I want to further my career as an officer because I love working in law enforcement,” said Servin. “As a kid I always looked up to cops and anyone that wears the uniform serving the public.”

Keeping a close connection with his family is a large part of what keeps him motivated, especially his three kids.

“My kids keep me going,” he said. “I’m really close to my family and although they were initially worried when I joined, I know they’re proud of what I’ve done. I can’t wait to see them again.”
