The ENERGY STAR product labeling program reduces greenhouse gas emissions by removing barriers in the market that deter consumers and businesses from easily identifying the financial and environmental benefits of purchasing the most energy-efficient product model that otherwise meets their needs. The Strategic Vision and Guiding Principles document below articulates the program’s organizing vision and approach and provides a detailed description of the principles underlying the ENERGY STAR products program.
The ENERGY STAR Product Development (PD) teams at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) aim to transform the market for manufactured good by expanding the availability and visibility of energy-efficient products.
Before developing or changing an ENERGY STAR specification, the PD teams follow an established evaluation process, which draws upon the expertise and resources of other stakeholders, including manufacturers, utilities, environmental groups, and other government agencies. This process allows us to make an informed decision as to whether or not to proceed with formulating or revising a product specification. It also ensures that new product specifications are consistent with the ENERGY STAR ENERGY STAR Strategic Vision and Guiding Principles (151KB), and that ENERGY STAR’s actions are effectively communicated to stakeholders, particularly in new target markets.
EPA and DOE consider the following criteria when determining whether to develop or revise ENERGY STAR product specifications:
