Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition - Food and Drug Administration

    March 22, 2010

Philip C. Spiller has been appointed Interim Director of the Division of Dietary Supplement Programs in the Office of Nutrition, Labeling and Dietary Supplements. This announcement follows the recent retirement of Vasilios "Bill" Frankos, Ph.D. A formal recruitment announcement for a permanent replacement for the Division Director position will appear shortly on USAJobs.com.

Mr. Spiller has been with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 1981 and has held senior executive leadership positions throughout his career. For nine years at the beginning of that part of his career, Mr. Spiller was in the Office of Legislative Affairs in the Office of the Commissioner where he rose to the position of Deputy Director. Much of his work involved facilitating communication between the FDA Centers and the Congress. In 1990, he became Special Assistant to the Commissioner on seafood-related matters and in 1994, became Director of the Office of Seafood. In 2007, he was appointed Senior Advisor for Special Projects to the Director of CFSAN. His senior executive experience will be valuable in maintaining the policy and enforcement priorities of the Division of Dietary Supplements while the Center engages in a national search for a new Director of this Program.

Mr. Spiller has a law degree from Boston College and an undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia. His awards while in FDA include The Secretary’s Award for Distinguished Service, four Commissioner’s Special Citations, and three FDA Awards of Merit.
