DTN Midday Grain Comments 06/29 11:39
Grains Mostly Higher at Midday
Grain trade is higher at midday due to position-squaring ahead of tomorrow's
USDA report.
By David Fiala

OUTSIDE MARKET SUMMARY:
The U.S. stock market indices are higher with the S&P futures up 8. The
interest rate products are lower. The dollar index is down 40 points. Energies
are higher with crude up $2.35. Cattle trade is mixed and hogs are up $1.
Precious metals are higher with gold up $12.
General Comments
Corn
Corn trade is higher at midday due to bull-spreading and position-squaring
ahead of tomorrow's Quarterly Grain and Stocks report. The July contract is 16
higher at midday while December is up 4. The trade remains firm at midday, but
the December contract is 13 cents off the early highs. A lower close this
afternoon would signal a chart reversal, which may lead to additional selling
interest. The Linn Group released updated acre projections yesterday. They
estimate corn acres at 89.4 million which was down 2.8 million from their
previous estimate. Look for active trade to continue ahead of tomorrow's
report. The average trade guess for planted corn acreage is at 90.76 million
with a range of 89.5 ma to 91.5 ma. The average stocks estimate is 3.302
billion bushels with a range of 2.99 bb to 3.51 bb.
Soybeans
Soybean trade is 5 to 7 higher at midday due to spillover support from corn.
Meal is $2 higher and oil is up 40 to 50 points. Beans should bounce back into
the mid-$13 area, but the trade should find chart resistance at $13.56 and
$13.59 which are the 20- and 40-day moving averages respectively. The Linn
Group estimated soybean acreage yesterday at 74.5 million, which was down from
their previous estimate of 75.9 million. Position-squaring ahead of tomorrow's
USDA report should dictate trade today. The average trade guess for planted
soybean acres is 76.53 million with a range of 75.5 to 77.19 million. The
average stocks projection is at 590 million bushels with a range of 477 mb to
632 mb.
Wheat
Wheat trade is mixed at midday with trade ranging from fractionally lower to
20 higher. The FSA office in North Dakota announced yesterday that an estimated
6.3 million acres of ground will go unplanted there. This has produced
follow-through buying today. On the chart, the July Chicago contract moved
above the 10-day moving average overnight at $6.51; nearby resistance is now up
at $6.90 which is the 20-day moving average. The Linn Group estimated all wheat
acreage yesterday at 56.1 million, which was down from their previous estimate
of 57 ma. The average acre projection heading into the report is 56.67 million
with a range of 55 to 57.6 million. Stocks are estimated to come in at 826
million bushels with a range of 791 mb to 878 mb.

Grains Close Mostly Higher in Quiet Session
Most grain contracts were able to finish higher in thin volume as traders
took to the sideline ahead of Thursday morning's quarterly stocks and planted
acreage reports.
