La Oficina del Censo está entrando en la primera de las fases principales del Ensayo General del Censo del 2008 después de reclutar a cientos de personas del condado de San Joaquin.
Desde ahora hasta el final de junio, se contratarán a aproximadamente 480 empleados locales para actualizar la lista de direcciones de la Oficina del Censo, es decir, para verificar, añadir y borrar direcciones. Ésta es la primera de las fases principales del ensayo general para el Censo del 2010. El ensayo general se llevará a cabo en el condado de San Joaquin, California y en el área de nueve condados alrededor de Fayetteville, Carolina del Norte.
"La base de un Censo del 2010 preciso - y la de un ensayo general del censo - depende de una lista de direcciones precisa", explicó Ralph Lee, el director de la Oficina Regional de Seattle de la Oficina del Censo. "Si no sabemos dónde entregar el cuestionario del censo, quizás no se cuenten a las personas que viven en esa dirección".
Desde el último censo, se ha estimado un aumento de 29,000 unidades de viviendas y 101,000 personas en el condado de San Joaquin. Todo el estado de California, con su propio aumento estimado de 774,000 unidades de vivienda y 2.2 millones de personas, será recorrido en la primavera del 2009 para obtener nuevas direcciones para el Censo del 2010.
Para ayudar a asegurar que el censo sea preciso y que se mejore su eficacia, la Oficina del Censo ha descartado el uso de lápiz y papel para actualizar sus direcciones y mapas. Ahora, los empleados del censo actualizarán la información de manera electrónica usando computadoras de mano y coordenadas del Sistema de Posicionamiento Global (GPS). Se agregarán las coordenadas de GPS a cada estructura residencial para que esté registrada dentro de la ciudad, condado u otra unidad geográfica a la cual pertenece.
Esto es muy importante cuando se redefinen los límites para los distritos congresionales y distritos legislativos del estado. El ensayo general es la oportunidad final que tiene la Oficina del Censo para afinar los detalles para la recopilación de datos con las computadoras de mano.
Los residentes pueden identificar fácilmente a los empleados del censo por sus tarjetas de identificación, computadoras de mano y bolsos del censo.
