COL David W. Buckingham
Colonel Dave Buckingham grew up in an Army family, graduated from Penn State in 1987, and was commissioned a Lieutenant of Infantry through ROTC.
As a lieutenant, he served 3 years in the 7th Infantry Division at Ft Ord, California where he led an Infantry rifle platoon during Operation Just Cause in Panama. He then volunteered for assignment to Korea and served as a Company Executive Officer and then aide-de-camp to the Assistant Division Commander. As a captain, COL Buckingham commanded A Company, 1/325th Airborne Infantry in the 82nd Airborne Division, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina and was then transferred to Fort Lewis, Washington where he commanded B Company in the 2nd Ranger Battalion.
As a major, COL Buckingham reported to the 2nd Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) where he served as Operations Officer and Executive Officer of 2/502 Infantry . COL Buckingham was then posted to Colchester, England as the exchange officer to the British Parachute Regiment where he commanded Company C, 2 PARA. While commanding in the PARAs, COL Buckingham deployed to Macedonia on Operation Essential Harvest, then led the company to Afghanistan in January 2002 on Operation Enduring Freedom as part of the first allied troops in Kabul. COL Buckingham returned from England in 2003 and served for two years as the J3 - Operations Officer of the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command in Hawaii.
As a Lieutenant Colonel, COL Buckingham commanded 3rd Battalion, 509th Infantry (Airborne) at Ft Richardson, Alaska, and served as the Chief of Operations for US Army Alaska. He then returned to Fort Bragg and assumed command of 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry, in the 82nd Airborne Division in Jan 2008. The Squadron deployed to Iraq, operated first in urban Baghdad then in rural Mada’in Province, led the longest sustained firefight in Baghdad in 2009 and redeployed having lost no paratroopers to combat or accident.
COL Buckingham reported to Vicenza, Italy in February 2010 and has been serving as the G3 - Director of Operations for US Army Africa.
COL Buckingham holds a masters degree in International Relations from Cambridge University, England; a Masters in Strategy and Policy from the Naval War College; and a BS in Industrial Engineering from Penn State. COL Buckingham is an Army Ranger, Master Parachutist, Combat Infantryman and among other decorations was awarded the Bronze Star for action in Afghanistan and Iraq.
COL Buckingham is married with children. The entire Buckingham family loves Italia and is thankful to be able to enjoy “Il Dolce Vita” with their Italian friends during COL Buckingham’s tenure as Comandante della Guarnigione Statunitense di Vicenza.

Il Col. Dave Buckingham proviene da una famiglia che vanta una lunga tradizione militare. Laureatosi presso l’Università Penn State nel 1987, è stato nominato Tenente di Fanteria grazie al programma di addestramento militare per studenti universitari (ROTC).
Come tenente, ha prestato servizio per tre anni nella 7^ Divisione a Fort Ord, California, dove ha avuto il comando di un plotone di fanteria durante l’Operation Just Cause a Panama. Egli, in seguito, ha prestato servizio volontariamente in Corea come Ufficiale Esecutivo e poi come Aiutante di Campo del Comandante di Divisione. Come capitano, ha assunto il comando della Compagnia A, 1/325° Rgt. Fanteria Aviotrasporta, 82^ Divisione Paracadutisti, a Fort Bragg, nel North Carolina, per poi essere trasferito a Fort Lewis, Washington, come Comandante della Compagnia B, 2° Battaglione Ranger.
Come maggiore, il Col. Buckingham è stato assegnato alla 2^ Brigata della 101^ Div. Par., dove ha servito due anni come Capo Uff. Oper. e Add. e poi come Uff. Esecutivo del 2/502° Rgt. F. di assalto aereo. E’ stato poi selezionato come Uff. di Collegamento con il Rgt. Par. Britannico a Colchester, in Inghilterra, dove ha ricoperto il ruolo di Comandante della Compagnia C, 2° Btg. del Reggimento Paracadutisti. Mentre era al comando di questa compagnia, il Col. Buckingham è stato inviato in missione in Macedonia per l’ Operation Essential Harvest, ed ha poi assunto il comando della campagna militare in Afghanistan nel gennaio 2002, a supporto dell’Operation Enduring Freedom, parte delle prime truppe alleate a Kabul. Nel 2003 è rientrato dall’Inghilterra e ha prestato servizio per due anni come Capo Uff. Oper. del Comando Finanziario Congiunto POW/MIA (Prigionieri di guerra/Dispersi in Combattimento) nelle Hawaii.
Come tenente colonnello, ha comandato il 3° Btg., 509° Rgt. F. (Par.) a Fort Richardson, in Alaska, ed ha servito come Capo delle Operazioni dell’Esercito Statunitense in Alaska. Nel gennaio 2008 è ritornato a Fort Bragg dove ha comandato il 5-73° gruppo squadroni, 82^ Divisione Aviotrasportata. Lo Squadrone, dispiegato in Iraq, ha operato nella città di Baghdad e nella zona rurale della Provincia di Mada'in ed ha sostenuto, nel 2009, il più lungo conflitto a fuoco nel MND-B senza riportare nessuna perdita.
Il Col Buckingham è stato trasferito a Vicenza nel febbraio 2010 e da allora ricopre il ruolo di Capo Uff. Oper. per il Comando Africa.
Il Col. Buckingham ha un Master in Relazioni Internazionali conseguito presso l'Università di Cambridge, in Inghilterra, un Master in Strategia di Sicurezza Nazionale conseguito presso il Naval War College e una laurea in Ingegneria Industriale conseguita presso l’Università Penn State. Il Col. Buckingham è un Ranger dell'Esercito, un Master Paracadutista, è uno specialista nelle operazioni di fanteria e tra le altre decorazioni, è stato insignito della Stella di Bronzo per le operazioni in Afghanistan e in Iraq.
