Centers
When wounded, ill and injured troops begin their journey home, USO Centers, especially those near major military medical facilities, are often the first support stop for wounded, ill or injured servicemen and women and their families. In April 2003, the USO opened a center embedded in the Contingency Aeromedical Staging Facility (CASF) at Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The CASF serves as a staging area for wounded warriors who are preparing for medevac transport back to the United States for further treatment and rehabilitation and is sometimes the first place wounded warriors are reunited with family. USO staff and volunteers provide a caring and compassionate presence for these warriors and their families.
In 2008, the USO completed the construction of a 4,000 square-foot USO Warrior Center at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center (LRMC) in Germany to extend supportive services to a greater number of servicemen and women and their families. The success of these facilities helped initiate Operation Enduring Care.
Operation Enduring Care is the USO's $100 million fundraising campaign to support construction of two USO Warrior and Family Centers at Ft. Belvoir Community Hospital in Virginia and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., endow these two centers and fund USO programs to support the troops, their families and families of the fallen.
Ground broke on construction of the Ft. Belvoir center in June 2011 and the project is half completed. Building at the Bethesda site is set to begin in 2012.
