Synchrotron X-ray Studies of

Advanced Nuclear Energy Systems at NSLS II

Announcement

In order to gather and hear the scientific community opinion we are organizing a workshop on Synchrotron X-ray studies of advanced nuclear energy systems at NSLS II to be held on April 28-29, 2011, at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Sponsored by Brookhaven National Laboratory, this workshop will focus on the use of synchrotron X-rays techniques for investigating advanced nuclear structural materials and fuels, radioactive materials, materials of interest to the nuclear forensics and national security, and fabrication of materials using ion implantation.

The primary objective of the workshop is to draft a Beamline Development Proposal for National Synchrotron Light Source II for a beamline dedicated to the study of radiation science. The beamline is envisioned to have two end stations: one with the capability to handle radioactive materials and one with ion beam accelerators and ultrafast detectors for in situ study of radiation and material interactions. The workshop will explore experimental and detection techniques as well as computational methods for studying radiation effects on nuclear materials. The workshop will identify the needs of the user community for such a beamline.

Topics

Motivation

The demands for carbon dioxide-free production of electric energy led to a worldwide recovery of interest in nuclear energy research and particularly in advanced nuclear power reactors such as generation IV reactors. New fuels and structural materials for these reactors need to be developed and their performance in the extreme environment of reactors, such as high neutron flux, needs to be verified. Exposure of these materials to the high doses exist in reactors results in highly activated materials. Thus testing of irradiated materials as well as fuels would require a facility that can handle radioactive samples. In addition, better understanding of the effects of radiation on matter is desired. To date many of the studies are done only following irradiation and irradiation-matter interaction processes are not being measured directly but simulated. However, to fully understand these processes in-situ experiments are required.

We are submitting a Beamline Development Proposal for experimental facility to be implemented at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) that would address these needs. The NSLS-II, which is currently under construction at Brookhaven National Laboratory, is a highly optimized third-generation synchrotron facility that will provide excellent brightness and flux as well as exceptional beam stability over a broad range of photon energies from infrared to hard x-rays. The beam line we propose would include two end stations: one with the capability to handle radioactive materials and one with ion beam accelerators and ultrafast detectors for in situ study of radiation and material interactions.
