Fellows' Prize Nominations

Fellows' Prize for Outstanding Research in Science or Engineering

Purpose

• To commend individuals for outstanding research performed at the Laboratory that was published within the last 10 years and that has had a significant impact on its discipline or program.
• To recognize and stimulate high-quality investigations in science or engineering by Laboratory staff members and to encourage publication in appropriate journals, books, or reports.
• It is particularly appropriate to nominate early-to-mid career researchers at the Laboratory for this award.

Eligibility

Nominees must be individuals who are full-time employees of the Laboratory at the time of nomination. All staff members of the Laboratory are eligible, but Lab Fellows and postdoctoral researchers are not eligible. The work may be classified or unclassified. The Fellows' Organization encourages the nomination of Laboratory staff who have carried out classified research.

Prize nomination

Any Laboratory employee may sponsor any eligible employee. The nomination package must not contain any classified material and should consist of the following:

1. A two-page letter of nomination detailing the nominee's merit relative to the award criteria
2. A CV of no more than two pages
3. At least three but no more than five supporting letters from Laboratory managers, members of the technical staff, and distinguished scientists from outside the Laboratory, as appropriate
4. A copy of the publication on which the nomination is based. If classified material would be an important part of the nomination package, the nominator should contact the Fellows' Deputy Coordinator, Joyce Guzik, 667-8927, to arrange for submission of such material.

Award review procedure

A review committee of Lab Fellows will be appointed by the Fellows' Coordinator. This committee will submit a short list of most qualified candidates to the Laboratory Director, who will select the awardee(s). No more than two research prizes will be awarded annually.

Granting the Prize

The Lab Director will present the prize at a formal colloquium, during which the recipients will describe their research.

Deadline

Nomination packages for this Prize should be reviewed by an ADC to assure that no classified material is included, and should be submitted by the deadline to Kim Thomas, STB Program Director, MS M714. The deadline for submission of nominations for this year's competition is Thursday, April 22, 2010. Fellows Prize for Outstanding Leadership in Science or Engineering

Purpose

To commend individuals for outstanding scientific and engineering leadership at the Laboratory and to recognize the value of such leadership. To stimulate the interest of talented young staff members in developing the skills and making the personal sacrifices necessary to become effective leaders. It is particularly appropriate to nominate early-to-mid career Laboratory staff for this award.

Eligibility

1. Any currently employed Laboratory technician, technical staff member, or manager, except a Laboratory Fellow, may be nominated for the Award.
2. The work must have been done within the past 10 years. Greater consideration will be given to leadership roles that continue to the present day as the full potential of these roles have not yet been realized.
3. The leadership to be recognized may involve either or both classified and/or unclassified work. The Fellows Organization encourages the nomination of Laboratory staff who have demonstrated leadership on classified efforts.
4. Candidates must have successfully demonstrated exceptional scientific or engineering leadership that serves the Laboratory mission in one or more of the following ways: a) Have provided inspiring technical leadership that has resulted in either singular or sustained outstanding scientific or technical achievement by a research team. b) Through recruitment, mentoring, support and encouragement, have enabled an exceptionally outstanding scientific or technical achievement. c) Have enabled their colleagues to rise to an exceptional level of scientific or technical achievement that they would not have been able to do otherwise, as measured by publications, national and/or international technical recognition, and DOE or Laboratory technical awards. d) Through exceptional technical support of activities outside the Laboratory, have served as a national resource in the area of national security.

No more than two Leadership Prizes will be awarded annually, and this prize may not be awarded every year.
