Last known combat veteran of World War I dies at age 110

Claude Stanley Choules, the last known combat veteran of World War I, died Thursday at a nursing home in the Western Australia city of Perth, The Associated Press reported. He was 110.

Choules, who was born in Britain in 1901, enlisted in the British Royal Navy a month after his 14th birthday and later served in the Australian navy, according to the AP report. He became the last surviving WWI veteran after American Frank Buckles died in February.

He told people the secret to his longevity was to just "keep breathing," AP said. He swam regularly until he reached age 100 and saw his first book, an autobiography in which he recounted witnessing the surrender of the German High Seas Fleet, published when he was 108.
