Dr. Emily Kyser Marsh was named the North Carolina District Superintendent in 2009. She began her career in education as a high school social studies teacher in Macon, Ga. Now she has more than 35 years of experience in education, with most of those years spent serving children of military members both in the United States and overseas. As she followed her husband, Col. (retired) Schappi Marsh around the world, she taught in Germany and Texas. When they settled in North Carolina, Marsh served as a reading teacher at Pope Elementary School, with the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS).Marsh served as a Fort Bragg Community Schools curriculum specialist in Early Childhood and also supervised the Language Arts program. She organized professional development offerings and served as the district chairperson for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) reaccreditation visit.
She assumed her first administrator's position at Fort Bragg as a principal in 1991. In this role she provided vision, programs and an effective organizational structure to promote student achievement and supports the goals of the DoDEA Community Strategic Plan. She organized and conducted professional development activities for teachers. Marsh also established and maintained strong ties and partnerships with the military support units, parents and other community leaders. In 2005 she was named a National Distinguished Principal and in June 2005 she was selected as Assistant Superintendent of the North Carolina District.
Marsh earned her Bachelor's of Science Degree in Education from Auburn University, Ala., her Master's of Education Degree from the University of Texas, El Paso, Texas, and her Doctorate of Education Degree, also from Auburn.
