Moving teenagers is no easy thing

Everything can be taken from a man or a woman but one thing: the last of human freedoms to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's own way.

Free Cookbook

Some of my favorite recipes were given to me by other military wives, like the cookies I bake every October, and homemade salsa that appears at almost every get-together at my house.

That's part of the reason I enjoyed reading Karen Tosten's Best of the Best Air Force Cookbook and writing about it. (Spouse Calls, June 1.) Due to a mailing mixup, Karen sent me two copies of her book and she agreed that I could give one away to one of you.

More love for the 4th

Walking through our base exchange here at Ramstein, Germany, the other day, I came upon a group of girls inviting shoppers to write notes to deployed soldiers. I thought I saw a familiar smile, and sure enough, it was Lauren Ewest, the young founder of Cups of Love.Click here to read more about this project in Spouse Calls.

Through her organization, Lauren has provided cups of love and encouragement in the form of candy and handwritten notes for hundreds of deploying soldiers who head downrange through the Ramstein passenger terminal.

Mocha Military Survey

This week’s Spouse Calls covers a survey and an upcoming book by military spouse and author Pamela McBride.

Pamela is surveying black and Hispanic military spouses to find out about their experiences for a book expected to be published in 2009 by Amistad/HarperCollins as part of their “Mocha Manual” series.

It's not easy being green

I have been following with interest the story of Alessandra Bosco, a beautiful Army wife and model, whose lingerie calendar for deployed troops has ruffled the pages of Stars and Stripes, along with the feathers of some military wives.

As I have thought through my own opinion of this item and Stripes coverage of it, I have realized that military wives are in a losing battle in terms of expressing their objections.

Sweet ingredients

While collecting entriesforthe Best of the Best Air Force Cookbook, author Karen Tosten saidreceiving stories and photos along with recipes from military families was among the sweetest ingredients.
