PEACHTREE CITY, GA — May 24, 2010 — Dr. Linda Curtis, Area Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba) announced today that Mrs. Angie Cotton has been named principal of Faith Middle School, at Fort Benning, GA, in the Georgia/Alabama District. Dr. Julio Gonzalez, Faith’s current principal, leaves at the end of the school year for Vicenza, Italy, with DoDDS-Europe.

Currently Cotton is the assistant principal at Faith Middle School (FMS). She has worked for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) for eight years since coming to FMS as a remedial math and remedial reading teacher in 2002. During her years as a teacher, she also taught honors language arts, social studies, READ 180 and AVID. She was named Georgia/Alabama Teacher of the Year in 2005. That same year, she was made acting assistant principal of Faith Middle school and in January 2007 she was officially named to the position. Prior to coming to DoDEA, Cotton taught in Colorado, New York and Kansas.

“Angie Cotton is an excellent educational leader as evidenced by her commitment to academic rigor at Faith Middle School, as the assistant principal,” said Dr. Dell McMullen, Georgia/Alabama District Superintendent. “She is a strong advocate for middle school students and welcomes strong parental engagement. Mrs. Cotton has been very instrumental in the use of technology to enhance teaching and learning, and she strongly supports Faith’s exemplary extra-curricular programs for students. I look forward to working with Angie in her new role as principal.”

Cotton earned her Bachelor’s of Arts Degree from Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. She earned her Master’s Degree as a reading specialist from Saint Bonaventure University, Saint Bonaventure, N.Y. She and her husband, David, who recently retired from the U.S. Army, have four children. Daughter Kindle is a nursing student, son Chandler is a college junior, son Cody is a college sophomore and daughter Kelsie is a high school junior.
