The Ministry of Agriculture released the Second Advance Estimate for the Indian Crop Year 2012/13 (June/May) on February 8th, forecasting food grain production at a near-record 250.1 million tons, despite a “below normal’ 2012 monsoon.  The ministry also raised the Indian crop year 2011/12 final food grain production estimate to a new record 259.3 million tons, largely on record production of rice, wheat and corn.

| U.S. Wheat Opportunity as Brazil Lifts Wheat Import Tariff | Grain and Feed, Promotion Opportunities, Agricultural Situation | Brasilia | Brazil | 2/13/2013
On February 5, 2013, the Brazilian Chamber of Foreign Commerce (CAMEX) approved a measure to allow up to one million metric tons of non-Mercosul wheat to enter Brazil with a waived common external tariff (CET).  The ten percent CET is applied on all eligible wheat imported from outside of Mercosul.  The import tariff reprieve will last from April through July, 2013.  Industry pressure and further demonstration of a Mercosul wheat shortage may likely precipitate a second tranche of waivers.

Italy is an interesting and lucrative market for U.S. pet food as demand continues to grow despite the economic crisis.  Leading factors for this growth include the increased importance of pets in Italian families and better marketing via large-scale outlets and specialized stores.  According to industry figures, the Italian cat and dog food market grew by 2.1% in 2011, to €1.604 billion.   In 2012, the United States exported $7.2 million in pet food to Italy.
