Brigadier General G.B. Stephenson is deputy chief of staff, comptroller, Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md.
General Stephenson was born in 1938, in Castalia, N.C., and graduated from Camp Lejeune High School, Jacksonville, N.C. He earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial management and production engineering from Indiana University in 1962 and a master of business administration degree in industrial management from Northeastern University in 1967. He completed Air Command and Staff College in 1972 and the National War College in 1980.
He was commissioned as a second lieutenant through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program. Upon entering active duty in 1962, he was assigned to the Electronic Systems Division, Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., where he served as a production officer and later as a procurement officer in a system program office having research, development, test and evaluation and acquisition responsibility for communications systems. After receiving his master's degree in 1967, he was assigned to the Electronic Systems Division's 484N-B System Program Office in Tokyo. While there, he served as chief of procurement and production, and procuring contracting officer for the RDT&E, acquisition and deployment of a microwave communications system. From December 1969 to August 1971 he served as a faculty member of the Defense Systems Management College, now located at Fort Belvoir, Va.
Upon graduation from Air Command and Staff College in June 1972, General Stephenson was assigned to the deputy for F-15, Aeronautical Systems Division, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. During this tour of duty, he served consecutively as chief of the Plans and Programming Division; special assistant for foreign military sales; chief of the Resources Division; and deputy director of program control for the RDT&E, acquisition and deployment of the F-15 fighter aircraft program.
In July 1977 the general was assigned to Headquarters Air Force Systems Command, as executive assistant to the vice commander. In 1979 he became the command's director for long-range corporate planning, with responsibilities for command-wide strategic resource and capabilities planning.
After graduating from the National War College in June 1980, General Stephenson became executive assistant to the Air Force vice chief of staff, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. He returned to Air Force Systems Command headquarters in June 1982 and was appointed deputy comptroller. He assumed his present position in September 1984.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
He was promoted to brigadier general Nov. 1, 1985, with date of rank Oct. 1, 1985.
