Brigadier General Hanson L. Scott is commander, Special Operations Command, Pacific, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii. Special Operations Command, Pacific, is a USCINCPAC subordinate unified command. The general is USCINCPAC's principal command adviser regarding all aspects of joint special operations to include mission priority, force structure, command and control, joint training, and readiness and employment of forces.
General Scott was born in 1939, in Magdalena, N.M., and graduated from Reserve (N.M.) High School in 1956. He attended New Mexico State University until 1957 and graduated from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1961. He received a master's degree in business administration from Auburn University in 1972. The general completed Squadron Officer School in 1968, Air Command and Staff College as a distinguished graduate in 1972, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1982.
The general graduated from pilot training in September 1962 and flew C-130E's with the 76th Air Transport Squadron, Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., and the 54th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. In February 1967 he was assigned to the 58th Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., where he flew RB-57F's.
After graduating from Air Command and Staff College in June 1972, General Scott was requalified in the C-130E at Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., and completed AC-130 training at Hurlburt Field, Fla. He then was assigned to the 16th Special Operations Squadron, 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand, as an AC-130 gunship pilot and flight commander.
In December 1974 General Scott returned to the United States and served as a staff officer in the Directorate of Current Operations, Headquarters Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, I11. In July 1976 he was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as a staff officer in the Mobility Forces Division, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Programs and Resources. He later served as special assistant to the director of programs, as chief of the Special Activities Division, and then as deputy assistant director for bases and units.
After graduating from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in June 1982, he was assigned as deputy commander for operations, 314th Tactical Airlift Wing, Little Rock Air Force Base. In July 1983 he became vice commander of the wing. From June 1985 to August 1986 he served as commander of the 463rd Tactical Airlift Wing, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. General Scott then was assigned as commander of the 1st Special Operations Wing, Hurlburt Field. In July 1987 he became vice commander of Military Airlift Command's 23rd Air Force and the Air Force Special Operations Command, Hurlburt Field. He assumed his current position in July 1989.
The general is a command pilot with more than 5,500 flying hours, including 450 combat hours. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with eight oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
He was promoted to brigadier general Jan. 1, 1988, with same date of rank.
