Brigadier General John J. Salvadore is commander, U.S. Air Force Recruiting Service, and deputy chief of staff for recruiting service and commissioning programs, Headquarters Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.
General Salvadore was born in 1939, in Chester, Pa. He earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from St. Joseph's College in 1961 and a master's degree in business administration from Syracuse University in 1971. He completed Armed Forces Staff College in 1975 and National War College in 1982.
He received his commission through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program. The general entered active duty in June 1961 and was assigned as a personnel officer with the 2nd Bombardment Wing, Hunter Air Force Base, Ga. In May 1964 he became chief of the Officer Special Actions Division, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Headquarters Alaskan Air Command, Elmendorf Air Force Base.
General Salvadore transferred to the Air Force Military Personnel Center, Randolph, in May 1967. He served as a career development staff officer and participated in developing a new career management system for Air Force officers. He then attended Syracuse University and received his master's degree through the Air Force Institute of Technology graduate studies program. While at Syracuse, the general was designated as a member of Beta Gama Sigma, a national scholastic honor society. In September 1971 he transferred to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as special assistant to the deputy chief of staff for personnel.
After completing Armed Forces Staff College in January 1975, he returned to the Pentagon as a personnel plans officer. General Salvadore later was assigned as the Air Force representative to an Office of the Secretary of Defense study group tasked to recommend changes in Department of Defense recruiting operations. In March 1977 he was assigned as chief of the Regular and Reserve General Officer Division, Assistant for General Officer Matters, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Manpower and Personnel, at Air Force headquarters.
General Salvadore attended National War College from August 1981 to June 1982. He then was assigned as commander of the 3501st U.S. Air Force Recruiting Group, Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., where he was responsible for Air Force recruiting for the northeastern United States. In July 1984 the general became deputy chief of staff for personnel, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Ramstein Air Base, West Germany. In June 1987 he became the assistant for general officer matters, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel, Air Force headquarters. He assumed his present position in December 1988.
The general's military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
He was promoted to brigadier general Aug. 1, 1988, with same date of rank.
