Major General Peter D. Robinson is commandant, Air War College, and vice commander, Air University, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.
General Robinson was born in Nashville, Tenn., and graduated from high school in Ann Arbor, Mich., in 1958. He earned a bachelor of science degree in basic and applied science from the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1962. He attended the Defense Language Institute, Monterey, Calif., in 1968 and the University of Freiburg, West Germany, as an Olmsted scholar in mathematics until 1970. The general earned a master's degree in planning and public administration from Pepperdine University in 1977. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1965, Air Command and Staff College in 1974, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1975, Air War College in 1978, and graduated from the British Senior War College, Royal College of Defence Studies, London, in 1981.
Upon graduation from the academy, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Force. In July 1962 General Robinson began pilot training at Webb Air Force Base, Texas, and upon completion in August 1963, was assigned to Luke Air Force Base, Ariz., for F-100 Super Sabre combat crew training. In June 1964 the general was assigned to the 81st Tactical Fighter Squadron, Hahn Air Base, West Germany, where he flew F-100s. In December 1966 he transferred to Bien Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, as a weapons officer in the 90th Tactical Fighter Squadron. During his Southeast Asia tour, General Robinson flew 325 combat missions in F-100s. He returned to the United States in January 1968 and studied German at the Defense Language Institute. From October 1968 to July 1970 he attended the University of Freiburg.
General Robinson then transitioned into the F-4 Phantom at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. In November 1970 he was assigned to the 555th Tactical Fighter Squadron, Udorn Royal Thai Air Base, Thailand, where he flew 110 combat missions as an F-4 pilot. In November 1971 he transferred to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as staff officer in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Personnel. From September 1974 to December 1975 he was the military assistant to the Air Force assistant secretary for manpower and reserve affairs at Air Force headquarters.
In December 1975 General Robinson was assigned to the 49th Tactical Fighter Wing, Holloman Air Force Base, N.M., as chief of operations and training, and later served as operations officer with the 9th Tactical Fighter Squadron. While assigned at Holloman, he also flew F-4s. He was chief of the Standardization and Evaluation Division from January 1978 to January 1979 during the wing's conversion from F-4s to F-15 Eagles. He assumed command of the 7th Tactical Fighter Squadron in January 1979. He served in maintenance as the officer in charge of the F-15 quality assurance program from January to June 1980, then became assistant deputy commander for operations.
In December 1980 General Robinson entered the Royal College of Defence Studies, and, upon completion, was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Ramstein Air Base, West Germany, as director of requirements and readiness from January 1982 to April 1983. He then served as vice commander of the 36th Tactical Fighter Wing, Bitburg Air Base, West Germany, until January 1985, when he became wing commander. In October 1987 he became commander of the 313th Air Division, Pacific Air Forces, Kadena Air Base, Japan. The general assumed duties as commander of Chanute Technical Training Center, Chanute Air Force Base, Ill., in September 1988. In January 1990 he became commander of the Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M. He assumed his present position in July 1991.
The general is a command pilot with more than 3,390 flying hours. His military awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross with three oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 27 oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal. General and Mrs. Robinson were recipients of the General and Mrs. Jerome F. O'Malley Award for 1986.
He was promoted to major general Feb. 1, 1990, with same date of rank.
