Major General William H. Reddell is commander of the San Antonio Air Materiel Area, Air Force Logistics Command, Kelly Air Force Base, Texas.

General Reddell was born in Sherman, Texas, in 1918. He attended North Texas State Teachers College and in 1941 joined the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Shortly after the United States entered World War II, in May 1942, he transferred to the U.S. Army Air Corps in the grade of second lieutenant. He flew 50 missions with more than 300 combat hours in the European Theater of Operations before he was shot down and captured by the Germans in 1944. He remained a prisoner of war until April 1945 when he was released and returned to the United States.

He was assigned to Air Training Command for the next two years and in July 1948 graduated from the Command and Staff School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala. Between July 1948 and August 1952 General Reddell served with the 97th Bombardment Wing, Biggs Air Force Base, Texas, in a series of assignments including personnel officer, deputy group commander, air refueling squadron commander, deputy for operations and director of materiel. From August 1952 until May 1954 he served as deputy director and later director of materiel for the 7th Air Division in South Ruislip, England.

In May 1954 General Reddell returned to the United States where he served as director of materiel for the Eighth Air Force, Westover Air Force Base, Mass. He became commander of the 26th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing, Lockbourne Air Force Base, Ohio, in June 1957. In April 1958 he became commander of the 301st Bombardment Wing, also at Lockbourne Air Force Base and remained in that position until March 1960.

He then became commander of the 42d Bombardment Wing, Loring Air Force Base, Maine, and in July 1963 assumed command of the 72d Bombardment Wing, Ramey Air Force Base, Puerto Rico He was assigned as deputy director of materiel for Strategic Air Command in May 1964. He assumed duties as deputy chief of staff, materiel, for Military Airlift Command in October 1965.

In April 1969 General Reddell was assigned as commander of the San Antonio Air Materiel Area, Air Force Logistics Command, at Kelly Air Force Base, Texas.

His military decorations and awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Purple Heart, Distinguished Unit Citation Emblem, and the French Croix de Guerre.

General Reddell's hometown is McKinney, Texas.

He was promoted to the temporary grade of major general effective Aug. 1, 1967, with date of rank July 1, 1963.
