Major General John D. Riddle is mobilization assistant to the chief of staff, Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio.
General Riddle was born in Indianapolis, Ind., where he graduated from Broad Ripple High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in marketing from Indiana University in 1955 and a master of science degree in management from the University of Southern California in 1971. He completed the Academic Instructor's Course in 1964 and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1978.
The general was commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program and entered primary pilot training in April 1956 at Malden AFB, Mo. He received his pilot wings upon graduation from basic pilot training at Goodfellow AFB, Texas, in June 1957, and was then assigned as a C-118 transport pilot at McGuire AFB, N.J. While at McGuire he also served as aide-de-camp to the wing commander.
In September 1963 he was assigned as aide-de-camp to the commander of the Military Air Transport support wing at Chateauroux Air Station, France, where he also assumed duties as an instructor pilot and operations plans officer. He returned to the United States in May 1964 as an assistant professor of aerospace studies at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., where he attended the Georgetown University Law Center. He volunteered for duty in Southeast Asia and in May 1967 and was assigned as a C-123 pilot with the 309th Air Commando Squadron, Phan Rang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. He was upgraded to instructor pilot and flew 914 combat hours with 1,127 combat sorties. During the 1968 Tet Offensive, he participated in many major airlift operations.
From August 1968 to July 1971 General Riddle served in Europe with two Military Airlift Command support units, first at Royal Air Force Station High Wycombe, England, as assistant scheduling and capabilities officer, and then at Rhein-Main Air Base, West Germany, as wing plans officer. In this capacity he contributed to theater airlift operations planning for Joint Chiefs of Staff and NATO-sponsored exercises.
After a two-year break in service, the general resumed his military status in August 1973 as a mobilization assistant assigned to the director of command and control, 21st Air Force, McGuire AFB. In June 1980 General Riddle was assigned as mobilization assistant to the director of legislative liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Air Force, Washington, D.C. A year later he became mobilization assistant to the deputy chief of staff, comptroller, Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson AFB, and in March 1984 was assigned as mobilization assistant to the commander, Logistics Operations Center, Wright-Patterson AFB. He became mobilization assistant to the commander, Warner-Robins Air Logistics Center, Robins AFB, Ga., in July 1985. He was assigned as mobilization assistant to the vice commander, Air Force Logistics Command, in November 1985. He assumed his present duties in August 1987.
The general is a command pilot with 7,000 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with four oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation (awarded by the president for support of the Marines during the siege at Khe Sanh), Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He was promoted to major general March 1, 1989.
