Maj. Gen. R. Mike Worden is Vice Commander, Air Combat Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va. He assists the Commander in organizing, training, equipping and maintaining combat-ready forces for rapid deployment and employment while ensuring strategic air defense forces are ready to meet the challenges of peacetime air sovereignty and wartime defense. ACC operates more than 1,200 aircraft, 27 wings, 17 bases and more than 200 operating locations worldwide with 105,000 active-duty and civilian personnel. When mobilized, the Air National Guard and Air Force Reserve contribute more than 900 aircraft and 56,000 people to Air Combat Command. As the combat air forces lead agent, ACC develops strategy, doctrine, concepts, tactics and procedures for air and space power employment. The command provides conventional, nuclear and information warfare forces to all unified commands to ensure air, space and information superiority for warfighters and national decision-makers. ACC can also be called upon to assist national agencies with intelligence, surveillance and crisis response capabilities.
General Worden is a 1976 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy. He has served four assignments in Europe, four in the Pacific, and has served in combat and hostilities in operations Desert Storm and Provide Comfort. The general has been Director of the Air Force Chief of Staff Operations Group, Director of Operations for U.S. Forces Japan, and executive assistant to the Commander of Pacific Command. He has also served as Deputy Commander for NATO's Combined Air Operations Center 6, and Director of Operational Plans and Joint Matters in the office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Air and Space Operations. Additionally, he has commanded an operations group in the Pacific, a wing in Europe, an expeditionary wing during hostilities in Operation Iraqi Freedom, and the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center at Nellis AFB, Nev.
