Brigadier General John D. Wood is vice commander of the San Antonio Air Logistics Center, Air Force Logistics Command, Kelly Air Force Base, Texas. He acts on behalf of the commander in the command and direction of more than 17,000 military and civilians who provide logistics support for 16 U.S. Air Force aircraft systems. The systems range in size from OV-10s to C-5s. He also assists in management of more than 80,000 engines for such aircraft as C-5s, F-15s, F-16s and C-130s. In addition, he is responsible for the management of more than 100 other assets, including: special weapons, aerospace fuels, automatic test equipment, ground equipment, life support equipment and precision measuring equipment.
General Wood was born in 1941, in Cleveland. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in industrial psychology from Ohio State University in 1963 and a master's degree in public administration from Auburn University in 1975. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1973, Air Command and Staff College in 1975, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1982 and the Indiana University Executive Management Program in 1988.
The general entered the Air Force in August 1963 and received his commission as a distinguished graduate of Officer Training School, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, in November 1963. His first assignment was to Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., where he served in the Consolidated Base Personnel Office. From September 1966 to October 1969 he was chief of the Airman Personnel Systems and Analysis Branch, Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Lindsey Air Station, West Germany. He then transferred to Headquarters Air Force Military Personnel Center, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, where he served in several data systems development positions.
Upon completing Air Command and Staff College in August 1975, the general served as chief of the Management Division in the Colonels Group, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C. When the group moved to Randolph Air Force Base, he became chief of the Washington-area liaison office for a year.
In July 1979 he was assigned to South Korea as executive officer to the J-1 (assistant chief of staff for personnel), U.S. Forces Korea, followed by assignment as executive officer to the vice commander/chief of staff, Combined Forces Command/United Nations Command, Korea.
General Wood graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in July 1982. He then became director of personnel, Sacramento Air Logistics Center, McClellan Air Force Base, Calif., and later served as base commander.
He transferred to Air Force Logistics Command headquarters and served as assistant deputy chief of staff, personnel, from August 1985 until May 1987, when he became deputy chief of staff, personnel. General Wood assumed his present position in January 1989.
The general's military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
He assumed the grade of brigadier general Oct. 1, 1989.
