Major General Henry L. Warren is deputy chief of staff, operations, Air Training Command, with headquarters at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas.
General Warren was born in 1922, in Fayette, Mo., where he attended Central College. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1945 with a bachelor of science degree in military engineering. He has a master's degree in international affairs from The George Washington University, 1965, and graduated from the Naval War College, 1965.
While at West Point, he attended pilot training at Stewart Field, N.Y., and received primary flying training at Corsicana, Texas. From June 1945 to June 1946, he served in several pilot assignments. He then moved to the Philippines, served with the 18th Fighter Group, and in June 1947, transferred to Japan as a member of the 49th Fighter Group.
He returned to the United States in November 1948 and became an instructor with the 3510th Basic Pilot Training Wing at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. In July 1949 he transferred to Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., to attend the Atomic Energy Training Course and was reassigned to Randolph Air Force Base, in November 1949 as tactical officer for the 3510th Basic Pilot Training Wing.
General Warren went to Korea in August 1950, where he flew 100 combat missions in the P-51 Mustang with the 39th Fighter Squadron.
In April 1951 he was assigned to the 83d Fighter Interceptor Squadron, Hamilton Air Force Base, Calif., and went with the squadron when it was relocated at Paine Field, Wash., in August 1952. He was selected as an exchange pilot with the U.S. Navy in August 1954 and served at Jacksonville Naval Air Station with VF 173. In March 1955, he was selected as air officer commanding in the Department of Military Training at the new U.S. Air Force Academy, then at Lowry Air Force Base, Colo.
He transferred to the 417th Fighter Bomber Squadron, Toul-Rosieres Air Base, France, in August 1957 as air operations officer. In May 1958 he became commander, 303d Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron at Sembach Air Base, Germany, and later at Laon Air Base, France.
In January 1959 he was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., as operations staff officer, Plans and Capabilities Branch, Air Defense Division, and later in the Tactical Division, Deputy Chief of Staff, Operations. He was named commander, 60th Fighter Interceptor Squadron, Otis Air Force Base, Mass., in August 1962. In August 1964 he entered the U.S. Naval War College, Newport, R.I. While there, he received a master's degree in international affairs from The George Washington University.
Following graduation in July 1965, he was appointed an Air Force representative in the Naval Warfare Department at the Naval War College. He became assistant deputy commander for operations, 363d Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., in June 1967, and became director of operations for the wing in July 1968.
General Warren was assigned as vice commander, 432d Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, Udorn Air Base, Thailand, in May 1969, and flew 85 combat missions. He became commander, 354th Tactical Fighter Wing, Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea, in January 1970.
In August 1970 he was named commander, 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, reorganized as the 347th Tactical Fighter Wing in May 1971. In January 1972 General Warren assumed duties as deputy commander, 22d North American Air Defense Command Region, North Bay, Ontario, Canada. He became the assistant deputy chief of staff, operations for combat operations at NORAD headquarters in March 1973.

His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal with 13 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Ribbon. He is a command pilot.
General Warren's hometown is Newport, R.I.
He was promoted to the grade of major general effective April 24, 1974, with date of rank July 1, 1971.
