Frederick von Harten Kimble was born at Portland, Ore., in 1895. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and was commissioned a second lieutenant of Infantry June 12, 1918.
The following month he entered the Infantry School of Arms at Fort Sill, Okla., from which he graduated in September 1918. In October 1918, he became an instructor at the Infantry School of Arms at Camp Benning, Ga. In May 1922, he became aide to Brigadier General George Van Horne Mosely, commanding general of Camp Custer, Mich. He entered the Air Service Primary flying School at Brooks Field, Texas, in October of that year, and following his graduation in May 1923, entered the Air Service Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas.
He graduated in February 1924, and joined the 26th Attack Squadron, Third attack Group, at Kelly Field as assistant engineering officer and operations officer. He was transferred to Clark Field, Camp Stotsenberg, Rampanga, Philippine Islands, where he joined the Third Pursuit Squadron in August 1924. In September 1926, he was named assistant department air officer at Headquarters Philippine Department in Manila. That same month he transferred to the Air Corps.
Returning to the United States in 1927, he was assigned to Selfridge Field, Mich., where he joined the First Pursuit Group and became acting adjutant and personnel adjutant. From July to October 1927, he was stationed at Brooks Field. He was then assigned to March Field, Calif., as commandant of the Flying Cadet Detachment and instructor at the Air Corps Primary Flying School. In May 1929, he became aide and pilot for the assistant secretary of war in Washington, D.C. In addition to his other duties, he was on duty as a military aide at the White House from the spring of 1930 to July 1934.
He entered the Air Corps Tactical School at Maxwell Field, Ala., in August 1934, and following his graduation, attended the Command and General Staff School at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. He graduated in June 1936, and was assigned to the Air Corps Tactical School, where he instructed in Combat Orders and Naval Operations from July 1936, to June 1940. During his last year at the school he also instructed in Signal Communications.
In July 1940, he became a member in the Plans Division, Office of the Chief of Air Corps, at Washington. In May 1941, he was named chief of the Airport Section, Building and Grounds Division, in the Office of the Chief of Air Corps. He became commanding officer of the Air Corps Advanced Flying School at Tuskagee, Ala., in January 1942. In December 1942, General Kimble was the commanding officer of the 7th Flying Training Wing at Cochran Field, Ga., and in October 1944, accompanied his division to the Pacific Ocean Area. He served there until February 1945, when he was assigned to command an Army Garrison Force in the Pacific.
In July 1946, General Kimble was named deputy to the Air Inspector at Army Air Forces headquarters. In June 1947, he became deputy to the air inspector for field operations, with station at Langley Field, Va.
General Kimble was assigned in December 1947, to the Alaskan Air Command as commanding general of the Aleutian Sector of the Alaskan Air Command. In January 1949, he became a member of the Secretary of the Air Force Personnel Council at Air Force headquarters. In July 1949, he was appointed deputy director of the council.
General Kimble has been awarded the Legion of Merit. He is rated a command pilot, combat observer and aircraft observer.
