Died April 29, 1991.
James Goree Moore was born in Yoakum, Texas, in 1908, and moved to Temple, Texas, with his family the following year. He graduated from Temple High School in 1925 and entered Southwestern University at Georgetown, Texas, where he received his bachelor of arts degree in 1928. He graduated from the University of Texas Medical School at Galveston, Texas, with a medical doctor's degree in 1932.
Dr. Moore served his internship at Highland Park General Hospital, Highland Park, Mich., and did post-graduate work in obstetrics and gynecology at Chicago Lying-In Hospital, Chicago, Ill.
First Lieutenant Moore was commissioned in the Regular Army on Dec. 8, 1936. He was promoted to captain on April 3, 1937, to major on Jan. 3, 1942, to lieutenant colonel on Aug. 26, 1942 and to colonel on Dec. 29, 1943.
Colonel Moore served with the World War II Air Transport Command in West Africa, the Middle East, North Atlantic, the Caribbean and in the continental United States.
During the Korean conflict he was flight surgeon for Pacific Division, Military Air Transport Service, stationed at Hickam Air Force Base, Territory Hawaii, from 1950 through 1953.
Returning to the United States from Hawaii, Colonel Moore served with the Western Air Defense Force at Hamilton Air Force Base, Calif., until he was transferred to Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, in 1955. He commanded the Lackland Air Force Base hospital until he transferred to Randolph Air Force Base, Texas, Aug. 15, 1957, as surgeon for the Air Training Command. He was promoted to brigadier general on Nov. 20 1958.
Brigadier General Moore resumed command of the Lackland hospital in June 1959.
He was assigned to the Air Defense Command as command surgeon in September 1960.
General Moore holds the aeronautical rating of chief flight surgeon, with more than 3,000 hours of military flying time to his credit.
