Maj. Gen. Clay T. McCutchan is the mobilization assistant to Commander, Air Force Special Operations Command, Hurlburt Field, Fla.
General McCutchan entered the Air Force in 1972 via the junior and senior ROTC programs. He served as a VIP airlift pilot, training officer and public affairs officer prior to transferring to the Reserve in 1975. While assigned to Duke Field, Fla., he was a special operations pilot, command post controller, historian and executive officer. The general participated in worldwide AC-130A Spectre gunship operations to include the Caribbean, Honduras, Colombia and Peru. He flew combat missions in Kuwait, and commanded a gunship during operations over Haiti. General McCutchan also flew AC-130A counterdrug missions and commanded MC-130P Combat Shadow tanker deployments to Italy for operations into Bosnia.
General McCutchan has served as a historian at the Air Force Historical Research Agency and mobilization assistant to the Air War College Commandant, Maxwell AFB, Ala. He also served as an AFSOC Crisis Action Team director during combat operations in Afghanistan. For five months he was on active duty at Shaw AFB, S.C., during combat operations in Iraq. During this time he worked as special assistant to the Commander, 9th Air Force, and then was put on G-series orders as Vice Commander (Provisional) and then Commander, 9th Air Force (Provisional). In 2005, he served AFSOC as a Safety Board President for the MC-130H Combat Talon II crash in Albania, and then the Accident Board President for the Iraqi Air Force Comp Air crash in Iraq. He has also led a team of U.S. Air Force experts on behalf of the 9th Air Force and CENTAF Commander to write a report and then brief possible counterinsurgency aircraft to the Iraqi Air Force leadership.
As a civilian, he works in Air Force civil service as a historian.
