Major General (Dr.) Dalton S. Oliver is mobilization assistant to chief of Air Force Reserve, Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C.
General Oliver was born in Medina, Tenn. He attended the University of Tennessee and later the University of Tennessee College of Medicine where he received his doctor of medicine degree in 1945. His specialty training in ophthalmology was at Harvard University and Bowman Gray School of Medicine.
During World War II General Oliver attended medical school under the Army Specialized Training Program. He was called to active duty during the Korean conflict as a captain with the 7505th Hospital Group. At the cessation of hostilities he was relieved from active duty and continued in the Air Force Reserve, serving in a variety of positions including liaison officer for the U.S. Air Force Academy, as well as surgeon for the recovery program in Louisiana.
He commanded Reserve medical service units at England Air Force Base, La., and Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., and was region surgeon of the 4th Air Force Reserve Region in San Antonio, Texas. From 1971 to 1973, General Oliver served as mobilization assistant to the surgeon, Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va. From 1973 to 1977, he served as mobilization assistant to the surgeon, Air Force Logistics Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, and from 1977 to early 1978, he served in a similar capacity at Air Training Command, Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. In March 1978 he was assigned as mobilization assistant to the surgeon general at Air Force headquarters. He assumed his present duties in July 1979.
General Oliver is presently chairman of the Reserve Medical Management Committee. He was a member of the Air Reserve Forces Medical Advisory Council from 1972 to 1978. He has recently been named as medical adviser to the Air Force Association.
His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with oak leaf cluster, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.
In his civilian capacity General Oliver is an ophthalmic surgeon practicing in Baton Rouge, La. He has been a consultant in ophthalmology to the Air Force surgeon general since 1970. He was associated with Project Hope in Peru in 1962 and, as president of the Delta-Eye Foundation, has been a frequent visitor to Montserrat in the West Indies and Honduras in Central America, providing voluntary eye surgical care to a rural populace.
General Oliver's civic affiliations include: Society of Medical Consultants to the Armed Forces, Aerospace Medical Association, Reserve Officers Association, Air Force Association, Association of Military Surgeons, U.S. Air Force Society of Clinical Surgeons, American Medical Association, Royal Society of Health, life fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Ophthalmological Association, Association for Research in Ophthalmology, fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a charter member of the American Intraocular Lens Society.
He was promoted to major general Feb. 13, 1979, with same date of rank.
