Brigadier General Cecil D. Crabb is the commander of Headquarters Tactical Training, George at George Air Force Base, Calif. As such he provides command supervision over the only operational F-105G "Wild Weasel" defense suppression units in the U.S. Air Force and the only training squadron for F-4C and F-105G "Wild Weasel" aircrews Air Force wide. He also supervises the replacement training of U.S. aircrews in the F-4C and F-4E and the training of German aircrews in the F-4E. Additionally, General Crabb represents the commanders of Tactical Air Command and Twelfth Air Force on matters relating to the F-105G "Wild Weasel" weapon system.
General Crabb was born in 1929 in Indianapolis, Ind., where he graduated from Shortridge High School in 1947. He has attended Butler University in Indianapolis, El Camino Junior College in Los Angeles, and Chaminade College in Honolulu. General Crabb graduated from the Air Command and Staff College in 1962 and the Air War College in 1968, both at Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala.
He entered aviation cadet training in September 1949 at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, and was awarded his pilot wings and commission as a second lieutenant at Vance Air Force Base, Okla., in October 1950. His first assignment was with the 433d Troop Carrier Wing at Greenville Air Force Base, S.C.
General Crabb underwent airborne training at Fort Benning, Ga., during February and March 1951, and then served as a forward air controller with the U.S. Army's 82d Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C., until he entered B-26 training in November 1952. In May 1953, after RB-26 crew training at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., General Crabb served for one year with the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing in Korea.
Upon return to the United States, General Crabb reported to the 479th Tactical Fighter Wing at George Air Force Base, Calif., for duty as a squadron flight commander, and later became wing director of safety. In August 1958, he joined the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing at Itazuke Air Base, Japan, and remained there until he entered the Air Command and Staff College. Following graduation in July 1962, he was assigned as a staff officer in the Directorate of Operations, Headquarters Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va.
In May 1965 General Crabb left for the Republic of Vietnam to serve with Headquarters Seventh Air Force at Tan Son Nhut Air Base. His next assignment was at Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., in the War Plans Division, Directorate of Operations, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, Plans and Operations. After attending the Air War College from August 1967 to June 1968, he was assigned to Headquarters Pacific Command, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii, as an air operations officer.
General Crabb entered the F-111 program at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, in July 1971 and served as assistant deputy commander for operations of the 347th Tactical Fighter Wing until January 1972 when he became deputy commander for operations of the 366th Tactical Fighter Wing. From August 1973 to September 1974, General Crabb was vice commander and then commander of the 347th Tactical Fighter Wing at Takhli and Korat Royal Thai Air Force bases in Thailand. He was named director of operations, 832d Air Division, Cannon Air Force Base, N.M., in October 1974, and remained in that assignment until July 1975, when he assumed command of the 27th Tactical Fighter Wing, also at Cannon Air Force Base.
General Crabb became commander of the 35th Tactical Fighter Wing at George Air Force Base, Calif., in August 1976, and was named commander of Headquarters Tactical Training, George upon its activation on Oct. 1, 1977.
He is a command pilot with 4,000 flying hours and wears the Parachutist Badge. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Medal, and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
General Crabb was promoted to the grade of brigadier general June 1, 1977, with date of rank May 30, 1977.
