Major General Archer L. Durham is director of deployment, U.S. Transportation Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla.
General Durham was born in Pasadena, Calif., in 1932, where he graduated from high school. He earned a bachelor of science degree in political science from Utah State University in 1960 and a master of science degree in international affairs from The George Washington University in 1975. He completed Squadron Officer School in 1960, Air Command and Staff College in 1961, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1973, National War College as a distinguished graduate in 1975, the advanced management program at Columbia University, and the program for senior executives in national and international security at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
He began his military career in January 1953 as an aviation cadet and in April 1954 received his commission and pilot wings at Laredo Air Force Base, Texas. In August 1954 he was assigned as a pilot with the 744th Troop Carrier Squadron at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C., and in October 1955 he transferred with the squadron to Kadena Air Base, Okinawa.
From June 1956 to June 1958 the general was assigned to the 2720th Maintenance Group, an Air Force Logistics Command unit, at Clark Air Base, Philippines, as a flight test maintenance officer. He then served with the 28th Logistics Support Squadron at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, as an aircraft commander and squadron plans and mobility officer. The squadron was redesignated as the 28th Air Transport Squadron and assigned to the Military Airlift Command in 1962.
In August 1963 General Durham transferred to the 1622nd Support Squadron in Paris, France, where he performed duties as an airlift command post controller until the squadron was disestablished in June 1964. From July 1964 to September 1966 he was assigned to the 322nd Air Division at Chateauroux Air Station, France, as a plans officer in the Directorate of Plans and Programs.
Returning to the United States in October 1966, he served at Headquarters Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill., as chief of the Advanced Programming and Policy Division, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans, until December 1968. General Durham was assigned to Headquarters U.S. Air Force, Washington, D.C., in the Directorate of Plans, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Plans and Operations, in January 1969. During this tour of duty, he served as a plans action officer and as assistant deputy director for plans and policy for Joint Chiefs of Staff matters. From June 1973 to June 1974 he was assigned to the 314th Air Division at Osan Air Base, South Korea, as director of plans and programs for U.S. air forces in Korea. He then returned to the United States to attend the National War College.
General Durham transferred to McGuire Air Force Base, N.J., in August 1975, as deputy base commander and became base commander in February 1976. He commanded the 1606th Air Base Wing, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., from July 1977 to February 1979, when he transferred to Dover Air Force Base, Del., as commander of the 436th Military Airlift Wing - the only all-C-5 wing in the Air Force. In February 1980 the general assumed command of the 76th Military Airlift Division, Andrews Air Force Base, Md. In February 1982 he was assigned as vice commander of the Military Traffic Management Command, Washington, D.C. General Durham became the director of plans, programs and policy, J-5, and inspector general, U.S. Readiness Command, MacDill Air Force Base, in March 1984. He was assigned as director of deployment, Joint Deployment Agency, at MacDill in April 1985. He assumed his present duties in June 1987.
The general is a command pilot with more than 6,000 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with two oak leaf clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with three oak leaf clusters, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal with service star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with six oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Reserve Medal and Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon.
He was promoted to major general June 1, 1984, with date of rank Sept. 1, 1980.
General Durham's hometown is Pasadena.
