Major General (Dr.) Fredric F. Doppelt is commander, Human Systems Division, Air Force Systems Command, Brooks Air Force Base, Texas.
General Doppelt was born in New York City in 1932, and graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in 1949. He attended State University of New York, College of Medicine, Syracuse, where he earned his doctor of medicine degree in 1956. He interned at New England Center Hospital in Boston from July 1956 to June 1957. General Doppelt then served as assistant resident and resident instructor in internal medicine at University of Utah Hospital, Salt Lake City, and senior resident in pulmonary disease at New York City's Bellevue Hospital from July 1959 to June 1960. He completed a master's degree in public health from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in Baltimore in 1963.
He began active duty in the U.S. Air Force in August 1960 as a ward physician, pulmonary service, at the Air Force Hospital, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. After completion of the primary course in aerospace medicine at the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, Brooks Air Force Base, he served as chief of flight medicine and preventive medicine until August 1962. He then entered Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health.
The general completed his residency in aerospace medicine at the School of Aerospace Medicine at Brooks Air Force Base in June 1965. From July 1965 to August 1969 he served in several key positions, including chief of the Crew Systems Division, Directorate of Bioastronautics, in the Manned Orbiting Laboratory Program in the Manned Orbiting Laboratory Systems Office, Space and Missile Systems Division, Los Angeles Air Force Station, Calif. He assisted the National Aeronautics and Space Administration as medical monitor during the Apollo program.
In September 1969 he was assigned as chief of hospital and aeromedical services at the Air Force Hospital at March Air Force Base, Calif. In June 1970 General Doppelt was named senior medical adviser with the Korean air force, and was later surgeon, Air Force Section, for the Joint U.S. Military Assistance Group, Seoul, South Korea. He was instrumental in the development of a dedicated Korean air force aeromedical system, within the Republic of Vietnam and to South Korea for Korean forces stationed in Vietnam, in which he flew some 540 hours.
He returned to the United States in June 1972 and reported to the 6570th Aerospace Medical Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, where he served as vice commander and later as commander. In June 1976 he took command of the Air Force Hospital at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. He remained there until July 1978, when he was named director of biotechnology, Office of the Command Surgeon, Air Force Systems Command, Andrews Air Force Base, Md. In March 1979 he became the command surgeon. The general transferred to Tactical Air Command, Langley Air Force Base, Va., in October 1982 and served as command surgeon. In October 1984 he assumed command of the Aerospace Medical Division, which was renamed Human Systems Division in February 1987.
General Doppelt is a fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association and the American College of Preventive Medicine, and a member of the American Medical Association, American Thoracic Society, U.S. Air Force Flight Surgeon's Society and the Air Force Society of Physicians. He is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Preventive Medicine (Aerospace Medicine).
The general is a chief flight surgeon and wears the senior missile badge. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.
He was promoted to major general Nov. 21, 1985, with date of rank Dec. 1, 1982.
