Brigadier General Lee A. Denson Jr. is deputy director for international negotiations, Plans and Policy Directorate, Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Washington, D.C.
General Denson was born in Long Beach, Calif., in 1933, and graduated from Western High School, Washington, D.C. He received a bachelor's degree with honors from the U.S. Military Academy in 1956. The general earned a master of public administration degree in 1962 and a doctorate in political science in 1967, both from Harvard University. He completed the National War College, Fort Lesley J. McNair, Washington, D.C., in 1976.
Upon graduation from the academy, he was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. He completed pilot training and received his pilot wings at Webb Air Force Base, Texas, in October 1957. After combat crew training at Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., General Denson served as a tactical fighter pilot and squadron weapons officer with the 81st Tactical Fighter Squadron at Toul-Rosieres Air Base, France, and Hahn Air Base, West Germany, from June 1958 to August 1961. In July 1964, after three years of graduate studies at Harvard University, General Denson taught international politics at the U.S. Air Force Academy and was designated an associate professor.
In March 1969 he was assigned to the 31st Tactical Fighter Wing at Tuy Hoa Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, as the wing's chief of standardization and evaluation, and operations officer for the 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron. While there he flew 222 combat missions in F-100s.
He transferred to Headquarters U.S. Air Forces in Europe, Lindsey Air Station, West Germany, in February 1970. There he served initially as a plans and programming officer and then as the command briefing officer. From November 1972 to August 1974 he was assigned as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization air planner in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, Washington, D.C. He then became the military assistant to the principal deputy assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs. During the 1975-1976 school year, General Denson served on the National War College faculty as director of academic affairs.
In June 1976 General Denson become deputy commander for operations, 47th Flying Training Wing, Laughlin Air Force Base, Texas. He transferred to Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe at Mons, Belgium, in April 1979 as executive to the chief of staff. From June 1982 to July 1985 the general served as deputy defense adviser and military adviser for the U.S. Mission to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Brussels, Belgium. He was then assigned to the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Plans and Policy Directorate, as assistant deputy director for international negotiations. He assumed his present duties in July 1986.
The general is a command pilot with more than 3,000 flying hours. His military decorations and awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross with oak leaf cluster, Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with 12 oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal and three unit citations.
He was promoted to brigadier general July 1, 1982, with same date of rank.
His hometown is Williamsburg, Va.
