Brigadier General Floyd E. Hargrove is inspector general, Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, Ill. In this capacity, he advises the commander in chief of Military Airlift Command and staff on the status of operational readiness, discipline, security of resources, safety, morale, welfare, and effectiveness of management practices within the command; directs command inspection and safety programs of active and MAC-gained Air Force Reserve and Air National Guard forces; and is responsible for command management of the inquiry and complaints program and fraud, waste and abuse program.

General Hargrove was born in 1936, in La Feria, Texas, and graduated from La Feria High School in 1955. He earned a bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Oregon in 1959 and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Alabama in 1967. The general completed Squadron Officer School in 1965, Air Command and Staff College in 1971, Industrial College of the Armed Forces in 1974 and the Air War College in 1977.

The general was commissioned through the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps program in 1959. He completed pilot training at Maiden Air Force Base, Mo., and Vance Air Force Base, Okla., and received his wings in September 1960. He then was assigned to the 962nd Airborne Early Warning and Control Squadron, Otis Air Force Base, Mass. In October 1963 General Hargrove transferred to the 311th Tactical Airlift Squadron, Da Nang Air Base, Republic of Vietnam. He returned to the United States in October 1964 and was assigned to the 965th Airborne Early Warning and Control Squadron, McClellan Air Force Base, Calif.

After graduating from the University of Alabama through the Air Force Institute of Technology program in August 1967, he was assigned as flying safety officer at the San Antonio Air Materiel Area, Kelly Air Force Base, Texas. He transferred to TUSLOG, Detachment 116, Cigli Air Base, Turkey, in June 1968 and served as emergency action officer. He was an assistant professor of aerospace sciences at the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, Wash., from June 1970 to June 1973.

He then returned to McClellan Air Force Base as chief of operations and training for the 552nd Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing. In April 1975 the general became commander of Detachment 2, 552nd Airborne Early Warning and Control Wing, Keflavik Naval Air Station, Iceland. After graduating from the Air War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Ala., in 1977, he became a political military planner in the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (J-5), Washington, D.C.

In June 1979 General Hargrove was assigned as assistant deputy commander for operations, 463rd Tactical Airlift Wing, Dyess Air Force Base, Texas, and one year later became deputy commander for operations. From June 1981 until January 1983 he served as vice commander, 374th Tactical Airlift Wing, Clark Air Base, Philippines. He then became commander of the 1550th Combat Crew Training Wing, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M. He was assigned as commander of the 314th Tactical Airlift Wing, Little Rock Air Force Base, Ark., from April 1985 to March 1986, when he became vice commander of 23rd Air Force, Military Airlift Command, Scott Air Force Base, I11. He assumed his present duties in July 1987.

The general is a command pilot with more than 7,500 flying hours, including more than 1,000 combat hours. His military decorations and awards include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, and Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster.

He was promoted to brigadier general July 1, 1986, with same date of rank.
