Equal Opportunity Directive 2000-22

U.S. Department of the Interior

Office of the Secretary
Washington, D.C.  20240

August 8, 2000

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY DIRECTIVE 2000-22

To:            Bureau/Office Equal Opportunity Officers

From:        E. Melodee Stith, Director, Office for Equal Opportunity

Subject:    Summary of Draft Final Accessibility Guidelines for Recreation Facilities and Informational Meetings

Attached for your information is a Federal Register notice that announces, for public review and comment, the availability of a summary of recommendations made by an ad hoc committee of the U.S. Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board (Access Board) for final accessibility guidelines on recreation facilities. The notice also provides a schedule of informational meetings that will be held by the Access Board to promote discussion of the summary. The summary results reflect the ad hoc committee's consideration of comments it received on a notice of proposed rule making on accessibility guidelines for recreation facilities that was published in the Federal Register on July 9, 1999, (copy attached). The proposed rule covered recreation facilities that are germane to this Department's outdoor recreation programs, i.e., swimming pools, fishing piers, boating facilities, golf courses and sports facilities. The proposed rule dictates when, what, and how accessibility is to be achieved.

All bureaus and offices that have civil rights compliance and enforcement responsibilities and those who administer recreation programs are encouraged to join the Access Board in its review and discussion of the summary. Informational meetings regarding the summary will be held on August 21-22, 2000, at the Hilton Garden Inn, 815 14th Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. and September 6-7, 2000 at the Holiday Inn Golden Gateway, 1500 Van Ness Avenue, San Francisco, California.

Comments regarding the summary must be forwarded to the Access Board, 1331 F Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20004-1111, by September 19, 2000.
