Humanities Division

The Humanities Division encompasses the departments of English and fine arts, foreign languages, history, philosophy and military strategic studies.

ENGLISH AND FINE ARTS
The English Department teaches future Air Force leaders an appreciation for the culture they have promised to defend and the ability to speak, listen, write and read effectively. The English major prepares cadets to serve the Air Force by focusing on literature, imagination and communication as deliberate human endeavors. FOREIGN LANGUAGES
The Department of Foreign Languages offers programs in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian, Portugese and Spanish. Within each program, courses develop cadets' language skills and help cadets develop a broad appreciation of the language's particular culture, history and language. HISTORY
The Department of History develops cadets' knowledge and perspective of American, military and international history through critical thinking, analysis, writing and oral presentations -- all essential skills for any Air Force officer. The department teaches two essential core courses in history to all cadets and offers 40 upper-division courses. The department also seeks to develop its own faculty, both professionally and academically, in order to provide cadets with the best possible instructors and role models in and out of the classroom. PHILOSOPHY
The Department of Philosophy administers the Air Force Academy's philosophy minor and, in conjunction with the English Department, offers a major in humanities. The department teaches the Academy's core course in ethics and offers a large number of elective courses, including classes on great philosophers, applied reasoning and comparitive religion. Department activities outside the classroom include participation in the International Symposium of Military Ethics and guest lectures for Air Force activities nationwide. MILITARY STRATEGIC STUDIES
The Department of Military Strategic Studies provides cadets with an intellectually rigorous and operationally relevant program focused on the context, theory and application of military power. The military strategic studies major program develops cadets' abilities to think as strategists, identifying and framing the operational environment while maintaining situational awareness with theories, models and strategies available to air, space and cyberspace power.
