9/17/2012 - U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- An English Department instructor here won his second Air Force Marathon in three years, finishing the 2012 marathon Sept. 15 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, in 2:28:58.

Capt. Brian Dumm won the 2010 Air Force Marathon with a time of 2:27:49.

"It was great to be out there representing the Air Force in a community that is so Air Force-proud," Dumm said. "What a great crowd, volunteers and weather; everything was just pitch-perfect."

More than 15,000 people raced in the marathon, representing a 100-percent increase in participation since 2008.

Gen. Janet Wolfenbarger, the commander of Air Force Materiel Command, opened the event with a reminder of the area's rich aviation heritage and thanked the more than 2,100 volunteers who contributed.

"This course traverses historical sites that will take you over, around and through more than 100 years of aviation history," she said. "These skies above you are truly sacred, so don't forget to look up."

A flyover by a B-2 Spirit, named the official plane of the 16th-annual marathon, marked the start of the race.

This year's event also included a half-marathon, 5k and 10k runs and a wheeled division.
