6/16/2011 - FORT LEE, Va. (AFNS) -- Fresh fruits and vegetables are often part of the menu for many commissary customers as they plan their Fourth of July celebrations. As a result, the Defense Commissary Agency is offering farmers-market sales events July 1-3, said its sales director.

"This is the first time the commissaries are offering a worldwide focused produce sale," said Chris Burns, DeCA's director of sales. "It's perfect timing because this is the time of year, we stock up on all our customers' favorites like watermelons, strawberries, corn on the cob, peaches, summer squash and tomatoes.

"We offer our customers the highest quality produce at the lowest prices possible," he added. "This makes your commissary definitely worth the trip, especially if you're stocking up for the holiday weekend."

On some military installations, the local morale, welfare and recreation programs will participate in the event. Commissary customers should check their base news outlets for more details on any local events connected with their own commissary's farmers market.
