Mr. Iftikhar Jamil is the Chief Information Officer for the National Weather Service (NWS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). In this role, Mr. Jamil is responsible for the information technology (IT) planning and evaluating activities for the NWS, to include coordination and development of the annual NWS IT Operating Plan, the NWS IT Strategic Plan, and coordination and implementation of all NWS IT security and critical IT infrastructure activities.
Mr. Jamil joined NOAA in 2007 as the Deputy Chief Information Officer for National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service, where he provided leadership, management oversight and direction in carrying out programs that achieve the NOAA objectives related to IT, Enterprise Architecture (EA), IT security, and other related IT matters.
Prior to joining NOAA, Mr. Jamil managed and developed the IT programs and initiatives supporting the U.S. Arms Control treaties, security and confidence building measures, and non-proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) requirements. In addition, his employment background includes National Communication System, and multiple defense agencies to include the Office of the Secretary of Defense. His experience ranges from policy development, Science and Technology (S&T) development, and operations and maintenance of IT infrastructure. Highlights of his career include: overseeing DoD’s IT S&T programs; supporting the development and implementation of Critical Infrastructure Protection initiative under Presidential Decision Directive 63; developing National and International telecommunications standards; supporting the development and implementation of arms control treaties and agreements; developing and implementing Government Emergency Telecommunication Service; and serving as the Chief Information Officer of a DoD agency.
Mr. Jamil received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from University of the District of Columbia (1986), and Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (2001).
