What is a National Guard Soldier?
Citizen Soldiers are ordinary people just like you. They come from every walk of life and from every part of the country. What brings them together as a team is their love of country, community, and their commitment to defend the American way of life.
Guard members train to be ready to serve whenever their country or community needs them. At minimum they train one weekend a month and two weeks a year. This allows them to have plenty of time with family and friends, go to college, or pursue a career full-time while serving as a National Guard soldier.
National Guard members take their commitment seriously. They learn important life-saving skills at US Army technical schools, and practice the same tactics, maneuvers and strategies as their Active Army counterparts. They operate the same equipment, weapons, and are toughened through the same rugged training conditions.
Today, the National Guard makes up more than half of the Army's combat power, as well as more than third of the Combat Support and Combat Service Support structure. Clearly Citizen Soldiers are more important than ever. Guard members are always ready to answer the call: New Mexico National Guardsmen and women are Beyond the Standard!!
