Internet2 of Ann Arbor Gets $1.84 Million Federal Grant

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative John D. Dingell (D-MI15) commended Internet2 of Ann Arbor, Michigan, for being awarded a $1.84 million grant from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).  Internet2, in cooperation with Carnegie Mellon, Brown University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Texas, and the University of Utah, will use the grant to create new tools to help Internet users protect their privacy online.

“Internet2 deserves this grant, and Internet users across the country will benefit from it,” said Dingell.  “The work Internet2 will do with this money will improve people’s ability to guard their privacy online.  With cybercrime and online fraud on the rise, being able to protect your identity online is more important than ever these days.  On a final note, I’m proud that NIST awarded this grant to an Ann Arbor-based company.  That is more proof that Michigan has the technical know-how and training to be a leader in cyber-issues moving forward.”

The grant Internet2 received today is one of five awarded by NIST, all of which total $9 million together.  The purpose of the grants is to pilot identity solutions that increase confidence in online transactions, prevent identity theft, and provide individuals with more control over how they share their personal information.
