Inspector General

The Inspector General (IG) is the commander’s eyes and ears. Through inspection processes, teaching and training, assistance, and investigation, its staff reports on the command’s discipline, efficiency, economy, morale, training, and readiness.

At the commander or deputy commander’s direction, the IG assess how well organizations comply with regulations and guidance. The annual plan includes inspections of the Offices of Defense Cooperation and other organizations within the command.  When EUCOM’s IG receives information about misconduct, fraud, waste, or mismanagement, their job is to analyze the information, which may include conducting an IG investigation, and then make recommendations to senior leadership on how to address the situation. The staff also receives and acts on whistle-blower and hotline cases referred by the Department of Defense IG.

Annually, EUCOM’s IG receives several hundred assistance requests from military, military family members, and members of the general public. Obviously, the requests provide an opportunity to assess how well the military’s various support systems are functioning. As a means to provide the command’s leaders with insight into issues, the staff also conducts annual command climate surveys.

Teaching and training are incorporated into everything the IG staff does; helping to educate military and civilian members on regulations and policy is a primary concern. As a theater security cooperation activity, the staff assists other nations in establishing and/or improving their similar oversight organizations and systems. The IG staff looks for opportunities to work with partner nations and has helped multiple bilateral and multilateral events focused on building IG capacity.
