The IHS Diabetes Care and Outcomes Audit is a process to assess care and health outcomes for American Indians and Alaska Natives with diagnosed diabetes. IHS, Tribal and Urban Indian health care facilities nationwide voluntarily participate in this process each year by performing a self-audit of medical records for patients with diabetes.

The WebAudit is a set of Internet-based tools for Audit data entry, uploading files from electronic audits, data processing and reporting—using a point-and-click interface for data entry into a secure, remote, centralized database. Once the data are entered, they can be viewed, edited or downloaded to a local system as a Microsoft Excel file. Reports on the data can also be run and downloaded via the WebAudit.

It is advised that you carefully read the Audit Instructions document and review the Audit Form for 2011 before beginning your Audit. There are also checklists to facilitate completion of all steps in the annual Audit process (manual or electronic).

Regularly assessing the care and health of patients with diabetes allows health care facilities to see the strengths and weaknesses of the diabetes care they are providing. To perform an Audit, data for patients with diabetes are collected at the local clinic or hospital by one of two methods: conducting a manual chart review, or extracting data from an electronic health record system for upload into the WebAudit interface.

There are many different training opportunities for the Audit, including classroom-based trainings and live and recorded WebEx sessions. Trainings are hosted by IHS and other organizations, covering a variety of topics, from comprehensive use of RPMS/DMS to using the WebAudit.

The IHS Resource Patient Management System (RPMS) can be used to extract data for an electronic audit. Tools for conducting an Audit are located in the Diabetes Management System (DMS) application and are updated each year.
In addition to extracting data for the annual Audit, these tools in RPMS/DMS can be used throughout the year to review data for individual patients, the entire diabetes registry or selected patients.
