Washington, Sep 19, 2012 -

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen announced the renewal of a successful collaboration between the University of Maryland and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for a period of three years. This agreement funds NIST activities at the Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (IBBR) on the University of Maryland Shady Grove campus.

“Today’s grant will allow the University of Maryland and NIST to continue a successful 25-year partnership that has enhanced scientific understanding of cell biology and contributed to the advancement of biotechnology,” said Congressman Van Hollen. “This collaboration leverages the resources of both institutions, promotes innovative approaches to scientific discovery and education, and provides an effective research base for the expanding bioscience industry.”

“This partnership, between scientists at NIST and UM, has resulted in a long- term, world class research program to investigate and harness the cell's most complex operations,” said University of Maryland President Wallace Loh.  “The continuing investment will produce new and improved medical treatments as well as new biotechnology applications.  We deeply appreciate the active support of Congressman Van Hollen and the Maryland congressional delegation that enables this engine of growth and knowledge.”
